Offense
Quarterback
- Drew Lock (6’4, 225, Junior) Last Year: 237/434 attempts, 3,399 yards, 23 TDs, 10 INTs
- Jack Lowary (6’4, 225, Redshirt Sophomore)
- OR Micah Wilson (6’3, 215, Redshirt Freshman)
Hear from Drew Lock after practice Tuesday (all videos via Tramel Raggs):
Nothing shocking here although it would be no surprise for either of the backups to get a few series vs Missouri State.
Running back
- Damarea Crockett (5’11, 225, Sophomore) Last Year: 153, 1062, 10 TDs
- Ish Witter (5’10, 200, Senior) Last Year: 162, 750, 6 TDs
Hear from running backs coach Cornell Ford:
We know about Crockett and Witter’s potential; as to the running back rotation, Josh Heupel said on Monday, “Those guys will sub each other out whenever they’re tired during the course of a drive. One guy being in versus another really will have no impact on the play calling.”
It sounds like Nate Strong is still recovering from a leg injury and Larry Rountree has really impressed during fall camp, meaning he could see action as RB3 this Saturday.
Receiving corps
X-WR:
- J’Mon Moore (6’3, 205, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 62, 1012, 8 TDs
- Dominic Collins (6’2, 185, Senior)
Here’s J’Mon Moore after practice Tuesday:
Y-WR:
- Dimetrious Mason (6’0, 185, Sophomore) Last Year: 47, 587, 3 TDs
- Emanuel Hall (6’3, 200, Junior) Last Year: 19, 307, 2 TDs
Slot:
- Johnathon Johnson (5’10, 185, Redshirt Sophomore) Last Year: 24, 435, 2 TDs
- Richaud Floyd (5’11, 190, Redshirt Sophomore) Last Year: 4, 94
Nothing really new at receiver, all three starters from last year return. Perhaps the most notable absence is that of redshirt junior Nate Brown.
Redshirt junior Ray Wingo, who had missed most of camp, is academically eligible and practicing with the team according to Barry Odom yesterday. Receivers coach Andy Hill spoke with reporters after practice:
Tight End:
- Jason Reese (6’5, 250, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 8, 97, 2 TDs
- Kendall Blanton (6’6, 260, Reshirt Junior) Last Year: 16, 161, 3 TDs
- OR Albert Okwuegbunam (6’5, 260, Redshirt Freshman)
Seniority leads the position with Jason Reese but the coaches were very high on Kendall Blanton last year and coming into 2017 so it’s interesting to see him splitting that “OR” with Albert Okwuegbunam.
Offensive line
Left Tackle:
- Tyler Howell (6’8, 330, Senior)
- Yasir Durant (6’7, 340, Sophomore)
Left Guard:
- Kevin Pendleton (6’4, 330, Reshirt Junior)
- Adam Ploudre (6’4, 315, Redshirt Senior)
Hear from Kevin Pendleton and Yasir Durant:
Center:
- Trystan Castillo (6’4, 315, Redshirt Freshman)
- Jonah Dubinski (6’2, 295, Redshirt Sophomore)
Right Guard:
- Tre’Vour Simms (6’5, 340, Sophomore)
- AJ Harris (6’4, 310, Redshirt Sophomore)
Right Tackle:
- Paul Adams (6’6, 315, Redshirt Junior)
- Samson Bailey (6’4, 295, Redshirt Junior)
One of the big questions heading into fall camp was the interior offensive line and the battle between walk-on turned scholarship players Jonah Dubinski and Adam Ploudre and freshmen Trystan Castillo and Tre’Vour Simms. Now it looks like Missouri will be going with a bit of a youth movement at center and right guard.
Former center Samson Bailey has moved out to backup right tackle and former blue chip center A.J. Harris has re-appeared on the two-deep after a couple of lingering injuries.
Defense
Defensive line
Rush End:
- Marcell Frazier (6’5, 265, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 34 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, 8.5 sacks
- Chris Turner (6’4, 250, Freshman)
Nose Tackle:
- Markell Utsey (6’4, 305, Sophomore) Last Year: 5 tackles
- A.J. Logan (6’2, 300, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 15 tackles, 2.0 TFLs
- Kobie Whiteside (6’1, 300, Freshman)
Defensive Tackle:
- Terry Beckner (6’4, 305, Junior) Last Year: 24 tackles, 2 TFLs
- Rashad Brandon (6’3, 300, Junior)
- Walter Palmore (6’4, 320, Junior)
A THREE-DEEP at defensive tackle shows off some of Missouri’s additions and returning healthy players like Markell Utsey at starting nose tackle after suffering an ACL injury last season. Pairing Utsey with Terry Beckner Jr. could be great news for #DLineZou but they’re also getting spring ball standout Rashad Brandon and recently eligible JUCO DT Walter Palmore to join experienced Senior AJ Logan and freshman Kobie Whiteside who the coaches are very high on.
Defensive End:
- Jordan Harold (6’2, 255, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 11 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks
- Nate Anderson (6’0, 265, Junior)
Freshman defensive end Chris Turner as a backup to Marcell Frazier should be no surprise to those who’ve been paying attention during fall camp.
Defensive line is the big question heading into this season, a concern made more acute with the loss of pass rusher Nate Howard and JUCO All-American Malik Young. New defensive line coach Brick Haley received good news during camp when JUCO tackles Rashad Brandon and Walter Palmore were ruled eligible and they look like they’ll immediately contribute.
More good news from yesterday, Barry Odom reported that four-star freshman Akial Byers is recovering from a sprained knee quicker than expected and could be practicing by next week.
Linebackers
Weakside Linebacker:
- Terez Hall (6’2, 230, Junior) Last Year: 20 tackles, 2.0 TFLs
- OR Joey Burkett (6’2, 230, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 40 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 2 INTs
Middle Linebacker:
- Eric Beisel (6’3, 245, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 44 tackles, 6.0 TFLs
- OR Cale Garrett (6’3, 235, Sophomore) Last Year: 47 tackles, 6.0 TFLs
Eric Beisel and sophomore Cale Garrett getting an “OR” tag here is no surprise given how much they shared middle linebacking duties last year.
Sam/Nickel Linebacker:
- Kaleb Prewett (6’1, 210, Junior)
- OR Brandon Lee (6’2, 225, Redshirt Junior) Last Year: 37 tackles, 4.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks
Kaleb Prewett and Brandon Lee getting “OR” designations is probably a sign of flexibility of the defensive alignments and schemes but it’s also good to see the redshirt Junior Lee back on the defensive two-deep.
Secondary
Cornerback:
- DeMarkus Acy (6’2, 185, Sophomore) Last Year: 6 tackles, 2 pass deflections
- Finis Stribling (5’11, 195, Redshirt Junior)
Cornerback:
- Logan Cheadle (5’10, 185, Senior) Last Year: 10 tackles, 1 INT, 4 PDs
- Adam Sparks (6’0, 175, Freshman)
- OR Anthony Hines (6’1, 200, Senior) Last Year: 5 tackles
With Christian Holmes’ injury there were concerns about the depth at cornerback, but as I mentioned on this week’s podcast, we could see former corner turned safety Anthony Hines move back to corner to help out and he joins freshman Adam Sparks with that “OR” label behind savvy senior Logan Cheadle.
Safety:
- Anthony Sherrils (6’0, 190, Redshirt Senior) Last Year: 53 tackles, 1.0 TFLs, 1 INT, 1 PDs
- Ronnell Perkins (6’0, 200, Redshirt Sophomore) Last Year: 43 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, 2 PDs
Anthony Sherrils spoke with the media after practice:
Safety:
- Jordan Ulmer (6’2, 195, Freshman)
- Cam Hilton (6’0, 185, Junior) Last Year: 49 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 1.0 sack
The biggest surprise here is freshman safety Jordan Ulmer earning a starting safety position with so many experienced guys ahead of him.
Special Teams
Kicker:
- Tucker McCann (6’0, 205, Sophomore) Last Year: 39/43 XP, 6/12 FG
Punter:
- Corey Fatony (5’11, 205, Junior) Last Year: 66 punts, 2894 yards, 43.8 average
Kick Returner:
- Johnathon Johnson Last Year: KR: 10, 171; PR: 14, 196, 1 TD
- OR Richaud Floyd
- OR Dimetrious Mason Last Year: KR: 1, 13
Punt Returner:
I didn’t see one listed specifically. If you find one please note it in the comments!
Long Snapper:
- James Workman (6’0, 215, Sophomore)
- Drew Wise (6’2, 235, Freshman)
