For the past five years, there’s been a hole in Mizzou’s basketball schedule and frankly in both fanbases whether one of those fanbases wants to admit it or not.

That hole, for two hours today at least, will be filled. Mizzou and Kansas tip off today at 3:00 PM at the Sprint Center which for another day will become Columbia West and Lawrence East.

Since the last time these two teams played competitively, a lot has happened. For Kansas the wins kept rolling in, the Big 12 regular season titles have flowed and the sadness and cruelty of the NCAA tournament continue unabated. The last being a loss to Oregon on March 25th, 2017.
Why do I point that date out, other than to rub salt in that wound? Well the night before Michael Porter Jr committed to Mizzou and effectively ushered in a brighter future that had begun with the hiring of Cuonzo Martin 9 days previous.
For Mizzou, from the Cuonzo hiring back to the last Kansas game there has been nothing but disappointment after disappointment. There was the Norfolk State game, the Michael Dixon terrible human being thing, the Colorado State game, the Frank Haith flees to Tulsa, the whole Kim Anderson tenure (roster turnover, closes losses, bad losses and single digit win seasons) and a self imposed tournament ban to boot.

To say the fortunes of these two teams have been the complete opposite of one another would be putting it mildly.
However, that all no longer matters because Mizzou is headed in the right direction (check out Sam’s enormous post here), are getting votes in the top 25, have a top 5 recruiting class and the #1 prospect in the country on their bench.

So today, we reignite an old flame that previously burned so bright. Some say the rivalry got too toxic at the end, others would tell you that’s how it has always been, but whether you’re excited for this game or just pumped up with rage, the game is happening and its all in the name of Hurricane Relief.

The time has come Tiger fans after five long years, Mizzou and Kansas fight on, Mizzou basketball officially turns the corner on three years of horrible basketball and we get a little taste of what we will get to enjoy this upcoming basketball season.
