Depth chart analysis
Richaud Floyd is back from a broken leg and ready to contribute. The preseason All-American returner suffered the injury in training camp this year and will make his season debut against South Carolina this Saturday. However, he’s listed as the second-string punt returner behind Johnathon Johnson and isn’t on the depth chart as a kickoff returner. It doesn’t seem likely he’ll make a large impact in the return game right away, and especially not at receiver, as he’s a third-string wide-out.
Taylor Powell is finally not a co-backup to Drew Lock anymore. It was bound to happen eventually, and it looks like the bye week may have been where Powell convinced Barry Odom and Co. that he should be the guy to back up Lock, not Micah Wilson. This doesn’t come as a surprise at all, as Powell has come in relief for Lock each time Odom has pulled his star quarterback.
Tyler Badie locked up his spot as the team’s primary kickoff returner. The speedy true freshman and Larry Rountree III have been flip-flopping on the depth chart through the first two games, as Odom was trying to decide who his best kick returning option was. It looks like it’ll be Badie for the remainder of the season. In Missouri’s loss to Georgia, Badie was a bright spot on a rough day for the Special Teams unit, as he returned two kicks for 63 yards — including one for 35.
True freshman corner Jarvis Ware is listed as a co-second-stringer. One of the underlying stories of this 2018 Missouri football season thus far has been the impressive play of true freshmen. It looks like Ware did enough in the bye week practices to earn himself more playing time in this week’s matchup with the Gamecocks. He may not sniff the field very much as he sits behind DeMarkus Acy, but expect Ware to come in for a few snaps Saturday. If this season’s performances by true freshmen is any indication, watch out, Terry Petry — Ware might just take your job.
