In case you didn’t catch the bad news last night, let’s rip the band-aid off really quick.
BREAKING: Jontay Porter tore his right ACL and MCL in today’s scrimmage against Southern Illinois. He’s out for the season. https://t.co/2UU5lrZRDM
— Alex Schiffer (@TheSchiffMan) October 21, 2018
Thanks to everyone who reached out! It’s hard to stay positive in the midst of something like this but everything happens for a reason.
— Jontay Porter (@JontayPorter) October 22, 2018
Here’s a bit from Schiffer’s story on how it happened.
A source who saw it happen said the injury on Sunday occurred while Porter was driving to the basket. A defender reached for the ball from behind him and caught his right arm. Porter fell backward with his right leg planted on the court and his left in midair. His right knee buckled and folded.
There’s going to be a lot of time for analysis, and we’ll have that for you soon. But for now, let’s see how everyone is taking the news.

For Porter personally, this is devastating. He passed on likely going in the back half of the first round in the NBA draft to improve his stock. Now this.

As the news spread, reaction trickled down from outside Columbia as well.
So sorry to hear the news, Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery for @JontayPorter ! He will bounce back better than ever!

Calipari told about Jontay Porter's scrimmage ACL/MCL injury. Pounds podium, groans. "I haven't eaten yet and I'm nauseous now." Recalls talking to Nerlens Noel on bus after injury at Florida "and he started bawling." Groans again. "I've been there. Oof. Ahh. It's awful."

Everything still hurts, and I’m still dying.
Hey, football is good again!
There were a lot of positives to take away from Saturday’s shellacking of Memphis, but as Ben Frederickson at STL Today points out, the secondary may be the most encouraging of them all.
But consider the base line, and now realize that a productive Memphis offense lost its best running back, shifted attention to the passing game, and the plan fizzled. That alone is encouraging. Mizzou limited White to 15 completions on 37 attempts. He threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions.
Of course, the secondary doesn’t really need to be good when you score 65 points in a game. But with Kentucky coming to town next weekend, and with Benny Snell battling a slight foot injury, now would be a good times to discover themselves.
Speaking of Kentucky...
#Mizzou opens as a 6.5 point favorite over Kentucky per Vegas Insider. I’m not surprised the Tigers are favored, I’m a little surprised it’s by that amount.

I’d imagine that line will get a little closer as the week goes on.
And, hey, the report cards are in! And they’re much more generous this time around!
- Almost everyone passed in Mitchell Forde’s book
- Alex Schiffer actually wasn’t as kind considering the results, and he’s got a point about the special teams!
