Can Mizzou’s resiliency carry it on a run to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament? If so, it starts tonight.

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Nashville Practice Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Five years is a long time.

So long, in fact, I can’t recall watching Mizzou’s eight-point loss to Colorado State in the first round of the 2013 NCAA tournament. Listless, that’s how it felt. Or another move in a step-wise regression.

A year later, Frank Haith fled to Tulsa, and MU trudged into the abyss for a three-year stay. And, as Sam Snelling detailed, a lot has transpired over the past 12 months. This season has unfolded in such a way that makes you think disaster or ecstasy is equally probable.

And so the Tigers take the floor tonight with just as much uncertainty hanging in the air. How will they fare without Jordan Barnett? Will Michael Porter Jr. be closer to performing at the height of his powers? Will this be a one-and-done excursion? Or will resiliency win out again, spurring a Sweet 16 run?

What I do know is that it’s nice to experience this particular strain of anxiety, because it means your program is relevant.

It has hope. Optimism, in fact.
