Depth chart analysis

It looks like true freshman wide receiver Jalen Knox won the position battle for second string wide-out over junior Alex Ofodile. Knox saw a lot of work in Missouri’s Week One matchup with UT Martin, hauling in an impressive catch along the sidelines. He saw the field a bit in Week Two as well, and it looks like head coach Barry Odom has made his choice clear — Knox will back up Nate Brown, while Ofodile, a Rock Bridge grad, will ride the bench.

It’s interesting Odom still lists Micah Wilson and Taylor Powell as co-backup quarterbacks. Powell has seen the field in Drew Lock’s relief against both UT Martin and Wyoming. It seems clear Powell is who Odom favors as Lock’s backup, but yet him and Wilson are still listed as co-backups. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense why Wilson hasn’t gotten any in-game work if he really is a co-backup with Powell.

True freshman weakside linebacker Nick Bolton has been promoted from a third-string role into a co-backup for Terez Hall. In limited game time, Bolton hasn’t accumulated much on the stat sheet (three tackles, 0.5 sacks), but has shown maximum effort every single play. He flies around the field and doesn’t look like a freshman out there. It’ll be interesting to see him get more playing time this week against Purdue.

Senior defensive tackle Rashad Brandon was scratched from the depth chart this week. He was initially listed as Terry Beckner Jr.’s backup, but Kobie Whiteside gets the nod for that spot in Week Three. Junior Markell Utsey will be both the third-string defensive tackle and nose tackle.

Looks like junior long-snapper James Workman will face the consequences from a poorly-snapped PAT that ended up being one of the more peculiar PAT’s in recent memory. The life of a long-snapper is tough — screw up once, and you’ll find yourself on the bench. That’s Workman’s reality this week as sophomore Drew Wise will take over long-snapping duties for Missouri.

True freshman Tyler Badie will handle kickoffs this week. While Larry Rountree III primarily handled kickoffs last week against Wyoming, it looks like Badie gets the nod for Saturday’s contest with Purdue. Odom has flip-flopped between the two each week so far, as it seems like he’s still trying to figure out who the best man for the job is. Maybe he’ll make up his mind this week if Badie takes advantage of the opportunity.
