Depth chart analysis
Jeffcoat makes his depth chart return
It’s been a very long two months for defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat, who was expected to start at defensive end this season. After spraining his elbow during the first practice of fall camp on Aug. 2, he hasn’t been anywhere near the depth chart since. He still wasn’t listed on the most recent depth chart released prior to Missouri’s matchup with South Carolina, but head coach Barry Odom has been adamant for weeks Jeffcoat was almost there in his recovery.
It looks like he’s finally made it, since Jeffcoat was listed on this week’s depth chart at defensive end, below Jatorian Hansford and Tre Williams.
What’s interesting about this depth chart is at every other position that lists three players, there is the -OR- distinction to show that either of the backups could be the primary backup. At this spot, Jeffcoat is just third on the chart. What this most likely means is that Odom, defensive coordinator Ryan Walters and defensive line coach Brick Haley aren’t yet comfortable making him a primary backup, since he has yet to see any game action and just returned to full contact drills in practice.
But with the skill and potential Jeffcoat brings, it shouldn’t be long until he leaps up to at least the two-deep.
Durant still in at LT
Yasir Durant is still listed as the starter at left tackle, despite sitting out last week’s matchup with South Carolina.
Durant left the game against SEMO a week prior with a neck injury, but was listed on the initial depth chart for the Gamecocks game and was even going through pregame warmups. He didn’t play, however— a decision the coaching staff made the day of the game.
Instead, they went with Larry Borom, who was solid in protection in place of Durant. With an entire extra week to recuperate though, Durant seems to be healthy and good to go as Missouri tries to end its post-bye-week losing streak under Odom.
