Welcome back to another round of The Fifth Down with Mitch Hill and Bennett Hughes!
A brief note: This was recorded at 10AM on Sunday morning, so obviously the big news involving Cale Garrett came out after recording, so while you listen, just smile because everything with Garrett happened and don’t cry because it might be over.
In this episode, our fair hosts discuss KB’s injury, the defense’s impressive performance, improvements still needed, and a brief trip around the College Football landscape
What are you waiting for?!? To the breakdown!
(start - 4:33): KB injury news and impact on next week’s game, Walters’ defense is playing lights out
(4:34 - 7:00): Cale Garrett’s case for Defensive Player of the Year, from barely recruited to Look At Him Now! Give him some Heisman votes! Mizzou’s impressive form tackling, not seen since the Kentrell Brothers’ era of Mizzou. Putting the Wyoming game in the rear-view mirror, insane opposing team rushing stats since game 1
(7:01 - 9:59): Look at those receivers! Jonathan Nance’s incredible play, Kam Scott’s triumphant return, Albert O’s acrobatic red zone catch... Who will be the most consistent down the stretch? Mitch is still looking for a huge game on the ground from the rushing team.
(10:00 - 13:10): Biggest takeaways? Barry Odom’s team prepared for the bye week like it was game week, and that was huge. The team is making adjustments and the players are buying in.
(13:11 -18:39): Good to see some second-stringers getting some experience since injuries happen. What does a Taylor Powell-led offense look like? He’s more of a game manager at this point, and not much of a dynamic player, but he’s got a lot of weapons on the defense to help him out.
(18:20 - 28:36): Looking around the league... “National Champions” UCF have now lost two in a row to decent teams. Lincoln Riley is trying to get yet another Heisman winner, and taking a look at some other early candidates. Dan Mullen has the Florida defense rolling, and keep an eye on them. The PAC-12 is eating each other alive. Big 10 football is like watching paint dry.
(28:37 - end): Back to Mizzou to wrap things up. Jordan Ulmer is transferring, and Trajan Jeffcoat is just... gone? Apologies that we’re recording early in case other news comes in (editor’s note- IT DID), but Bennett has a date with Chiefs Kingdom!
