MIZ-ZOOM: Preparing for Kentucky and awaiting COVID results

Coach Drinkwitz discusses last week’s bye and the challenges of facing Kentucky.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — On Tuesday, the University of Missouri’s Head Football Coach, Eli Drinkwitz addressed the press via zoom call.

Coach’s meeting today was brief, but didn’t lack for substance

Last week’s, “unexpected,” bye week was disappointing for all Mizzou fans. With the Tigers coming off a statement win against LSU, it was easy to think they’d keep the momentum rolling against a struggling Vanderbilt team.

However, that is no longer the case. Instead, the Tigers are now hosting the Kentucky Wildcats due to a recent schedule change thanks to Covid.

Coach Drinkwitz was complimentary when talking about the Wildcats and their coaching staff. He mentioned that he believed their offensive coordinator, Eddie Gran, is the most underrated coordinator in the SEC right now.

Additionally, Kentucky has bested the Tigers every year since 2015. Drinkwitz said this fact is definitely prevalent in the locker room, and that he wants his guys to use it as motivation to go get a win on Saturday. Ultimately, Drinkwitz stated that preparation will reflect the overall outcome.

In regard to the team’s current situation with COVID-19, there are currently no players out with the virus. However, that is dependent on a few tests that are expected to come back this afternoon. Coach Drinkwitz nearly let slip how long it has been since the team’s last positive test, but refused to leak that information in fear that it would cause “bad juju.”

For this week’s game against Kentucky, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see Drinkwitz break into the depth chart at wide receiver. Following the victory against LSU, which saw two of Mizzou’s top targets sidelined, Drinkwitz states that he believes the wide receiver position has incredible talent. D’ionte Smith and Tauskie Dove both had stand out performances against LSU, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see them take significant snaps against Kentucky.

Drinkwitz finished his talk mentioning that in this wonky 2020 season, we’re going to see all kinds of contributions from all kinds of players.

That’s all from this weeks press conference with Coach Drinkwitz. Stay tuned to Rock M Nation later this afternoon for more from the players.
