It was fun while it lasted :(
We knew it was coming from a mile away. It’s not a shock. In fact, it’s pretty deserved. Still, it’s no fun to accept.
After another deflating loss to Ole Miss last week (and a cancelled game against Texas A&M), Missouri officially fell out of the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since December. The Tigers climbed as high as No. 10 in the rankings before their recent slide.
Want to know how far Mizzou fell out of the rankings? Here’s the full breakdown of the non-ranked teams getting votes:
BYU 101, USC 88, Clemson 47, Florida 24, Tennessee 19, St. Bonaventure 16, Oregon 15, Missouri 13, Wichita State 11, Maryland 9, Toledo 8, Connecticut 5, Belmont 5, Winthrop 4, North Carolina 4, UCLA 2, Louisville 2, UC Santa Barbara 1, Drake 1
So an additional loss to Ole Miss dropped Missouri all the way down to 33rd... one spot behind Oregon and one before Wichita State, both teams the Tigers have wins over this season. What a strange season.
Still, there’s time for the Tigers to recover. After the LSU game was added back to the schedule, Missouri now has two Quad 1 games on the table.
Dave Matter broke down what’s all on the table during this last week of the season, with scenarios ranging from a double bye in the SEC Tournament to the 10th seed.
But the Tigers can certainly help themselves over the next week with games against Florida (away) and LSU (home).
Lots of different scenarios could unfold, but to climb into the top four seeds, which means the double bye in the tourney, Mizzou has to sweep Florida and LSU and get some help with a LSU loss to Vanderbilt on Tuesday.
And while it’s certainly not as tangible, there’s no doubt at least one additional Quad 1 win would help keep Missouri in the favored seed range. Who knows — maybe two Quad 1 wins would get Missouri back to the 5-seed line? After all, I know we’d all feel great about a 5-12 match up. Nothing ever goes wrong in those games!
