Happy Opening Day!

Opening Day is here with a full slate of games, and a couple of former Mizzou baseball pitchers will be drawing Opening Day starts.

Making his first Opening Day start of his career, Rangers RHP Kyle Gibson gets the ball against the Royals in Kansas City at 3:10 p.m. CST.

Then of course there’s the Nationals’ Max Scherzer. The three-time Cy Young winner, seven-time All-Star, and 2019 World Series Champion will be making his sixth career and fourth straight Opening Day start in a much anticipated opener against Jacob deGrom and the Mets. That game is set for 6:10 p.m. CST and can be seen nationally on ESPN. It’s an obvious call, but CBS Sports ranked deGrom/Scherzer as the best Opening Day pitching match up.

And after being called up last season in late September by the Red Sox, Tanner Houck made three starts with Boston, going 3-0 with an 0.53 ERA. Not only was that enough to make the Red Sox Opening Day roster, but he’s also in the starting rotation.

Houck isn’t starting today, but is expected to make the start on Saturday afternoon against the Orioles at Fenway.

Peter Fairbanks will also have a key role in the bullpen for the defending AL Champion Tampa Bay Rays, and Jayce Tingler manages one of the most exciting teams in baseball in the San Diego Padres.

Enjoy the Opening Day action! Onto the links and M-I-Z!
