Mizzou’s Quarterback room now coming into 2023 is one of the more interesting ones in the SEC. Returning is Starting Quarterback Brady Cook coming back for his fourth year with the Tigers along with the Four Star Recruit Sam Horn returning for his second season. However incoming Miami Transfer Jake Garcia can tell us quite a bit about Eli Drinkwitz’s plans for the Quarterback position for the upcoming season.
With the recent news coming out regarding Brady Cook’s playable torn labrum during the Kansas State game, it was reported he would miss out on spring football. With this in mind before Jake Garcia transferred that would mean before spring ball only two scholarships would be takings reps. The two Quarterbacks have very little to no experience as Sam Horn only played very few snaps against New Mexico State along with highly recruited Gabarri Johnson fresh from high school. The recent Miami transfer seemed like a great addition for Mizzou as he recorded 803 yards, 5 Touchdowns along with 4 interceptions while attending Miami. Coming out of high school Garcia was highly recruited as a four-star with offers from powerhouses like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, USC, etc. The sky is the limit for Garcia at Mizzou and with the right tools many believe he can emerge as a top Quarterback in the SEC.
I think many can agree Brady Cook was fairly average if not below average during the season with the Tigers. Don’t get me wrong He showed amazing flashes of promise, but that also came with mediocre performances coming against schools mainly in close games like Kentucky, Florida, Kansas State, and especially the near upset against the Georgia Bulldogs where it seemed he couldn’t finish the job.
Drinkwitz adding Garcia in the mix to compete can tell us a few things. Number one he’s not satisfied with the current room being down to Cook, Horn, and Johnson as well as showing the Starting Job is open to anyone, not just Brady Cook. It can also tell us that newly hired Kirby Moore will be a Big Presence in the decision-making for this new 2023 offense. Time will only tell how this upcoming competition shapes up for the Missouri Tigers.
