Missouri vs Arkansas football GameDay: info, where to watch, predictions

A really cool sponsored Battle Line trophy is on the line!

NCAA Football: Arkansas at Missouri Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

It’s time for everyone’s favorite story-time hour, “Better know your rivalry”! Brought to you today by Shelter Insurance this time, because that’s really who sponsors the Battle Line trophy... or possibly just the game sponsorship. I don’t know, but it’s listed as the Shelter Insurance Battle Line Rivalry and there’s a very big fancy trophy where the winner puts their plate on the border of the two states.

Whether or not this game is a rivalry, I guess it depends on who you ask. There are segments of each fan base that will go out of their way to tell you this is not a rivalry, which is why I would contend that it is one. If you go by the text book definition of rivalry it says: “competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field.” So if we’re being technical about this, Missouri has a rivalry with nearly every team in College Football to one degree or another. But certainly they have a rivalry with a team they play every year and share a border with. Even if it’s not as heated as the school to the west, it’s still in the ballpark of a rivalry.

The rivalry since Missouri has joined the SEC has been fairly one sided however. With the Tigers winning 7 of the 9 games. The wins were so frequent that Barry Odom never lost to the Hogs. The only losses were in 2015, in Pinkel’s last season, and then two years ago when the Tigers stubbed their toe in Fayetteville during Arkansas best season since 2011 when Bobby Petrino was trolling the sidelines before things skidded out of control.

Since that season Arkansas has tried Bret Bielema, Chad Morris, and Sam Pittman. Only Bielema suceeded in having a winning record in the SEC for a season, that was in 2015. Meanwhile, the Hogs have gone winless in the league three times since league expansion.

So this could be a big game for them. They’re capable of keeping things close. They lost to LSU by 3, Ole Miss by 7, Alabama by 3, Mississippi State by 4 (they also only scored 3 points in that one), BYU by 7, and beat Florida by 3. Only LSU and Auburn were able to beat Arkansas by more than a touchdown. So don’t be surprised if this is a close game.
