Mizzou drops home opener, awaits news about Mama Dembele

Mizzou Links for January 8, 2024.

Let’s hope it’s not too serious

Coming into this season, it was understood that Mizzou Women’s Basketball needed to have an NCAA Tournament sort of year. Quite frankly, that hasn’t happened.

There have been, however, bright spots. One of them has been the emergence of Mama Dembele as a true star and leader — she logged her fourth double-double of the season in Sunday’s SEC home opener with 10 points and 10 assists. However, as the Tigers were working to close the gap and overtake Alabama, the senior guard collided with another player and had to be helped off the court.

The Tigers would eventually fall 79-64, but the loss seemed to pale in comparison to what losing Dembele would mean for Robin Pingeton’s squad. The coach talked about her impact after the game.

We’ll have to wait to see any official results, though the initial glimpse of the injury obviously doesn’t look good. Mizzou is already facing an uphill battle toward postseason qualification. Losing your most important player doesn’t make things any easier.

Mizzou will host No. 1 South Carolina on Thursday night.
