Mizzou Links for Friday, March 28

In case you’re keeping track, Mizzou is now 3-0 on their East Coast road trip, and have scored 33 runs in two days (three games). You can read my Game 1 recap here, and the Game 2 recap here.

Now, if you have read my work so far this season, you’d know that I have been mildly shocked and disappointed at the performance of former MVC Player of the Year, Mya Dodge, who was ultimately taken out of the lineup for a bit while Mizzou head coach Larissa Anderson tried out other replacements in left field. But after Chantice Phillips had some issues tracking and corralling fly balls over the weekend against LSU, Dodge was added to the lineup on Sunday and went 1-2 and did well in the field. Hence, her recent stretch of starts.

In the last three games, Mya has been on a TEAR. She went 3-3 in Game 1 and 1-3 in Game 2, and then Thursday was 3-3 with three doubles, two homers and 10 RBI (of her 16 total), raising her batting average from sub-.200 to .291 and now has a slugging percentage of .545, which is second on the team behind the regulars, trailing only Alex Honnold (.639).

Anyway, back to Thursday’s game in Fairfax, VA (about 20 miles from Washington, DC), home of the George Mason Patriots, where they have unlimited pitching, apparently.

The Tigers’ offense was spread out in this one, scoring in four of six innings before forcing the run-rule victory. In the 2nd, after Katie Chester reached on a leadoff error, Mya Dodge doubled off the right field wall, giving the Tigers a one run lead, which they’d add to in the 3rd on back-to-back successful bunts by Kayley Lenger and Jenna Laird and a single by Alex Honnold loaded the bases for Maddie Gallagher, who singled to 2B to make it 2-0. Katie Chester was then hit by a pitch (it eventually took her out of the game), which brought in another run, and so was Kara Daly (she was fine), to make it 4-0. A sac fly by Dodge brought in another run, making it 5-0 after three.

Missouri had a chance to make it even worse in the 4th but left the inning with the bases loaded after Lenger made an unfortunate base running gaffe to end the inning with a double play.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the 4th that the Patriots struck back, plating one run after a single and RBI double made it 5-1. Mizzou pitcher Lilly Whitten had been pretty effective to that point, allowing just one baserunner on a single in the 2nd and two in the 3rd on a double to the warning track (Dodge almost got a glove on it) and a walk.

In the 5th, the Tigers tacked on another run via a Julia Crenshaw leadoff homer to LF, before another Dodge doubled for the second time on the day. Stefania Abruscato followed with a hit by pitch and then both runners advanced on a passed ball, which allowed Laird’s sac fly to plate another, making it 7-1.

In the bottom of the 5th, Whitten’s final inning of work, she allowed a single up the middle despite a really good effort by Laird at short and a subsequent stolen base, but a strikeout — her sixth — ended the (mild) threat. She left the game having allowed five hits while fanning six and walking just one.

In the 6th (and what would be the final inning), Mizzou added to their run total, plating four. Gallagher, who ended up 2-for-3 on the day, singled to RF and then swiped 2B. Abby Hay, who replaced Chester at 1B after the HBP, and Crenshaw then walked to load the bases, before Dodge unleashed a bases-clearing double to CF, making it 10-1 and run-rule territory. But the Tigers weren’t done! Phillips, pinch hitting for Lenger, reached on a very bad throwing error that sailed past the first baseman’s glove, allowing Dodge to score to make it 11-1.

In the bottom of the 6th, Nathalie Touchet entered to close things out, and while she wasn’t super sharp, she got it done. After forcing two quick outs, she allowed a single to Bales, who was 3-3 on the day, a walk, and a single to RF to make it 11-2. Alas, Laird was able to make the final out and the Tigers preserved their 11-2 run-rule victory in six innings, putting them at 28-7 on the year with just one more Spring Break game to go.

Gymnastics

I had to write about softball or else this would have been the post. My beloved Tiger gymnasts now, on top of SEC-high SEVEN All-Conference members and two All-Freshman honors for Kennedy (my student) and Hannah, not to mention an SEC Specialist of the Year crown for one Jocelyn Moore (also my student), THREE Tigers have achieved All-American status, which is a program high and just the coolest damn thing ever. The hugest of congrats go out to graduate engineering student Sienna Schreiber, who was named regular season First Team All-American on beam, and junior Jocelyn Moore and senior LIU transfer Mara Titarsolej, who were named Second Team All-Americans on floor and bars, respectively.

Sienna, despite being a fifth year, has put together the best freaking season of her LIFE, earning career-highs on three out of four apparatuses. Specifically in regard to the beam, she’s tied for 8th nationally with a 9.95 NQS (national qualifying score). She’s recorded NINE beam routines of 9.90+, and per MUTigers.com, is on a streak of five 9.90+ scores in a row, including her first perfect 10 against Arkansas on Senior Day. Only nine other gymnasts in the country have scored a 10 on beam this year. Sienna has received WCGA regular season honors four times now, but it’s her first time earning 1st Team honors (she was 2nd Team in 2021 & 2022).

Jocelyn’s 9.960 NQS on floor is tied for ninth in the country this year, just missing out on First Team honors (you have to finish in the top 8 to get 1st Team), and she’s part of this crazy duo to score a 9.90+ in every floor routine this season. On March 17 at the Illinois Quad, she finally scored her perfect 10 after flirting with it all season long. This is Joci’s first WCGA regular season All-American honor on FX, after earning honors in 2022 & 2023 on Vault.

Mara’s 9.95 NQS puts her squarely in 10th nationally, and per MUTigers.com, has had seven routines of 9.9+ (she did have that very graceful fall the one week), and set Mizzou’s program record twice this season. She also earned a perfect 10 this season on the road at the Mizzou to the Lou event in mid-February. Mara is coming off a co-SEC title in bars from the conference meet last weekend where she earned a 9.95 in the afternoon session, which then carried over to a co-victory with LSU’s Ashley Cowan. This is the third regular season All-American honors of Mara’s career, following 1st team recognition in 2022 and 2nd team honors in 2023.

Mizzou Links for Wednesday, March 27

Fresh off a spectacular weekend in which the then-#15/16 Tigers took two of three from the then-#2/3 Bayou Bengals, they’ve packed their bags for the big city. Three big cities to be exact— The Big Apple, the nation’s capital, and the City of Brotherly Love.

First up, a trip to New York — Hempstead (Long Island) to be exact— for a double header against Fordham University, located in the Bronx. and host school (and Larissa’s longtime place of employment) Hofstra.

GAME 2: Missouri 2 | Hofstra 1 (9 innings)

Whereas the Tigers feasted upon the Fordham Rams in Game 1, it was more of a famine in Game 2 against the Hofstra Pride. Facing much better pitching from Julia Aspel (6-4, 1.57 ERA), Missouri struggled to get much of anything going, being held to only four hits in nine innings while stranding six. Good thing the Tigers’ pitching was successful in well, allowing just four hits and a single run (off a solo HR).

Missouri stranded one in the 1st after Jenna Laird led off with a hit by pitch. She got as far as third before Katie Chester had a two-out hit by pitch. Unfortunately, she was caught stealing to end the inning. They stranded another in the second after a Mya Dodge walk, but she would get no further than 1B.

The Tigers’ offense “erupted” (I use that term loosely) in the third after Alex Honnold smacked a two-out triple to right center and Maddie Gallagher followed up with a single up the middle, scoring Honnold and giving Missouri a 1-0 lead. The inning ended with a strikeout. In the 5th Mizzou stranded yet another after a hit by pitch, but nothing came of it.

Hofstra wasn’t much better in the offense department, though their struggles were honestly a bit more expected, as they’re hitting just .216 as a team (Mizzou is hitting almost .300). They got their first hit on a leadoff single to left in the bottom of the 2nd before a 5-4-3 double play ended it. After the Tigers scored, the Pride attempted to strike back, getting two on with back-to-back singles before a bunt popout and two strikeouts ended the threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, with newly named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week honoree Marissa McCann in the circle, Hofstra finally struck back, tying it up on a solo shot by Becca Vaillancourt to left center, making it 1-1.

How would the Tigers respond? Turns out, not well initially. In the top of the seventh, Dodge singled to right and then made the critical error of leaving the base early. This was even more irritating as Abruscato walked next, and then the pinch runner, Claire Cahalan, advanced on a passed ball. That would have put runners on 2B & 3B instead of just on 2B. Regardless, Lenger grounded out and the inning ending with another stranded. In the eighth they had another chance after Honnold was hit by a pitch with one out, but two subsequent groundouts took it away.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, the Tigers finally capitalized. Not in a big 8-run way like the game prior, mind you, but that wasn’t needed. Kara Daly got things started with a leadoff walk, and despite two quick outs after her, she was able to advance to third with freshman Stefania Abruscato, fittingly a New Yorker, up next. And Fania delivered, singling up the middle, past a diving Hofstra player, bringing home Daly to take the 2-1 lead. A strikeout ended the inning, and McCann was able to work around a walk in the bottom of the 9th to secure the win for the Tigers, now 27-7 (4-5 SEC).

Tigers take a trip to New York, and just like Alicia Keys said, these streets will make you feel brand new, big lights will inspire you.

Well, the Tigers certainly started off their Mizzou Takes the Northeast trip with a bang, didn’t they? Fresh off a spectacular weekend in which the then-#15/16 Tigers took two of three from the then-#2/3 Bayou Bengals, they’ve packed their bags for the big city. Three big cities to be exact— The Big Apple, the nation’s capital, and the City of Brotherly Love.

But first... some song lyrics from the incomparable Alicia Keys to get the vibes right. Hempstead/Long Island is around 30 miles from Manhattan, but whatever.... it’s in the vicinity.

This game was absolutely crazy, y’all. We’ll get to the offense in a minute, but we need to start with CC, who was exemplary.

Y’all, Cierra Harrison was incredible in this game, allowing only a single hit while not issuing a walk (YAY!) and striking out a half dozen. And if not for a single in the fifth and a FC that got another runner on, Harrison would have had the program’s 13th perfect game in history and another non-no on resume.

She struck out two in the first to go with a ground out to Daly at 3B before striking out two to start the second inning before inducing a popup to Chester at 1B. It wasn’t until the third that a ball even left the infield, as CC got two lineouts to Lenger in RF a foul out to Daly at 3B. In the fourth, she worked a popout to — you guessed it — Daly at 3B in between two more strikeouts, bringing her tally to six on the day. She came into the fourth with just 37 pitches, mind you. THIRTY-SEVEN. In her final inning of work, after an infield popup to Daly at 3B, Michaela Carter worked a single through the left side to break up the no-no and the perfect game. A fielder’s choice by Nicki Sudall took out Carter to put two away, ending Harrison’s awesome day.

Lilly Whitten came in to get the last out and initially had a bit of control issues, with a wild pitch that advanced the runner to 2B, and a passed ball that hit off of Crenshaw’s protective gear to take 3B. An infield popup to short ended the inning (and game).

As for the offense, what a great day for so many Tigers, but especially one who has had a noticeably quiet season thus far, Mya Dodge, who was part of the 8-run second inning, 6-run fourth, AND 6-run fifth. There was a lot of offense, you guys.

In the second, a Katie Chester single got things started, and Kara Daly followed with a walk on four straight pitches. A Julia Crenshaw fielder’s choice took out the lead runner before — WELCOME BACK, MYA DODGE — clobbers a pitch to left to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead off of Fordham pitcher Holly Beeman.

And the Tigers weren’t close to being done, as freshman New Yorker Stefania Abruscato singled up the middle and Kayley Lenger followed with a successful bunt that left the Rams with no play to put two on for another New Yorker, Jenna Laird, who singled up the middle, making it 4-0. Alex Honnold then reached on a costly error by 2B Allie Clark that brought home two additional runs, making it 6-0 and bringing in a new pitcher, Olivia Simcoe.

With Simcoe in the circle, Honnold swiped second, and another New Yorker, Maddie Gallagher, singled through the right side, making it 7-0. After Chester struck out, Gallagher advanced to second on a wild pitch, before another error on a routine popup made it 8-0.

In the fourth, Gallagher was hit by a pitch, and after a foul out, another Tiger, this time Kara Daly, unleashed a bomb, making it 10-0 Tigers.

Back-to-back singles by Crenshaw and Dodge and a two-out walk by Lenger loaded the bases for Laird, whose hard hit single to the right side brought in two more, making it 12-0 and taking Simcoe out of the game for Devon Miller, who walked Honnold intentionally to load the bases. Gallagher then also walked, to make it 13-0, and pinch hitter Abby Hay also walked in a run, making it 14-0. The inning finally ended on a Daly foul out.

In the final inning, the Tigers, perhaps mercilessly, added on another crooked number, as a Crenshaw walk was followed by ANOTHER homer, this time a two-run shot, to make it 16-0. And just like the prior innings, the Tigers weren’t done. Abruscato singled to center before Laird and Claire Cahalan worked one-out walks to take out Miller, and bring back in the starting pitcher, Beeman. Former Rock Bridge star Abby Hay doubled to center, clearing the bases to make it 19-0, before Madison Walker singled to left, scoring Hay and making it 20-0 before Daly was tagged out at third for the final out.

Final Thoughts

The Tigers FEASTED upon the Rams pitching and got production from like, everyone. The only starter without an actual hit was Alex Honnold, as she reached base via walk and error, a stolen base and a run scored. Claire Cahalan didn’t have a hit, but she walked and had a run scored, leaving only pinch hitter Danielle Blackstun with nothing to really show for it. Laird was 2-3 with 3 runs scored, 3 RBI and 2 walks. Gallagher was 1-3 with a walk, HBP, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Chester was 1-3, Hay was 1-1 with 4 RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Daly was 2-4 with 2 RBI, a walk, and 2 runs scored. Crenshaw was 1-3 with a walk and 3 runs scored. Walker was 1-1 with an RBI as a pinch hitter. Dodge was 3-3 with 5 RBI, a walk, 2 homers, and 3 runs scored, and Lenger was 1-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored.

Missouri led from start to finish in early session vs. #12 Arkansas, #14 Auburn and #18 Georgia

HELLLLLLLLLLLLO, POSTSEASON. With not quite as large of a crowd on hand than I would have thought at the Smoothie King Arena in NOLA — seriously, where was everyone in the lower bowl? — the Missouri Tigers tipped off what hopes to be a long postseason journey for the Black & Gold.

Overall, the Tigers finally put together four complete rotations. Facing off against #12 Arkansas, #14 Auburn, and #18 Georgia, they led from start to finish in the first session of the SEC Gymnastics Championships. Missouri’s final score narrowly kept them from beating out Florida, who finished just ahead of them (0.025) in the 4th place spot in the evening session, which featured #2 LSU, #7 Kentucky and #8 Alabama.

A reminder before we get into scores— this was the first meet of the postseason with four judges, meaning the top and bottom scores are dropped, and the middle two are averaged. (Don’t worry; I’m including the judges’ scores below, and the links go to the extra videos of their routines.) The extra judges tend to lend itself to lower scores, and also, the earlier session is said to be a bit more tightly judged than the evening session, unfair and frustrating as hell as that may seem.

Rotation One— MIZ Bars | ARK Vault | AUB Beam | UGA Floor

Missouri kicked off its SEC Championships on bars with what seemed like pretty low scores across the session. Kyra led off with a 9.775 score with the judges scoring her 9.85, 9.80 and 2x 9.75 scores) despite a stuck landing and a good connection in her series overall. Rayna followed with a stick as well, earning a 9.825 (9.90, 9.85, and 2x 9.80 from judges). Amaya didn’t quite stick the landing, but it was close, and also earned a 9.825. Interesting here were the judges’ scores, as one gave her a 9.55, while the others awarded two 9.85 and a 9.80. I’m unsure of where that low score came from, honestly, and I’m glad it was dropped. Sienna was next with another stuck landing and some gorgeous, tight handstands, earning a 9.875 with two 9.90s, a 9.85 and a 9.80. Jocelyn’s foot slid a little bit on her dismount and her last handstand was a bit short, but she earned a nice 9.85 (9.90, 2x 9.85, 9.80 from judges), before Mara earned three 9.95 and a 9.90 (dropped) for a 9.95 anchor score.

The 9.95 score led the Tigers and earned her a share of the SEC bars title with LSU’s Ashley Cowan. The Tigers’ 49.325 rotation score, which dropped GAD’s score, was their 6th highest of the season and was 7th (out of 8th) in the combined standings.

Arkansas got started on vault, which also seemed to have lower scores (I’m sensing a theme here, y’all). The GymBacks’ 49.05 score was led by Lauren Williams’ 9.85 and a 9.825 by Hailey Klein. They and also counted two 9.80 scores and a 9.775, while dropping an out-of-control landing that featured a bunch of extra steps (9.525).

Auburn got started on beam, putting together a 49.15 score, thanks to a 9.90 by Sophia Groth and 9.85 scores from Aria Brusch and Cassie Stevens. They were able to drop a fall (9.475) and also counted a 9.80 and 9.70.

Georgia got started on floor and struggled mightily, only earning a 48.875 that ultimately put them in catch-up mode the rest of the meet. As Shannon has told us multiple times this season, this is a tough, tough place to be. The Dawgs were led by Lily Smith’s 9.875 and two 9.80 scores by Ady Wahl and Sidney Fitzgerald, and also, due to some issues, had to count both a 9.725 and 9.675. They dropped a 9.65.

Is Mizzou beam BACK?! Probably too early to say, but I sure liked what I saw on Saturday afternoon. Grace Anne led off with a 9.525, so the Tigers didn’t exactly get off to a great start. I asked my gym colleague Nate Salsman about this, and he said he noticed some bobbles in her dance series, that could have changed the difficulty (start value) on her routine. While it appears that one judge, awarding her a 9.90, didn’t notice this snafu, but the other three (2x 9.45, 9.60) did. The large discrepancy in scores led to quite a long break in between performances, so it was interesting to see how Rayna, back in the beam lineup for the first time in since the Arkansas meet in late February. She did great, you guys!
She was followed by a career-high 9.875 by Kennedy, who earned two 9.90 scores, a 9.85 and a 9.80 from the judges, and then came Sydney, who crushed it, earning a season high 9.925 and her best score since 2022! The judges agreed, awarding her two 9.95s, a 9.90 and a (shocking, but dropped) 9.85.

Not mind blowing in that it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, but more so in the way of how she landed on her back handspring—layout stepout—layout stepout series. I swore she was coming off the beam because she was crooked as hell, but she managed to stay on and was only discounted for a form break. The judges applauded her effort, giving her two 9.85s, a 9.80 and a 9.70 (dropped).

The Tigers’ 49.300 rotation score was their 4th highest of the season, and was 7th (out of 8th) in the combined standings. Thankfully they were able to drop Grace Anne’s score.

Arkansas took to uneven bars next, putting together a 49.25 rotation score off of two 9.875 scores by Reese Drotar and Maddie Jones and two 9.85 scores by Priscilla Park and Sirena Linton. Their final counting score was a 9.80 while dropping a 9.775.

Auburn, who averages a 49.40 on floor, didn’t have a very good showing, earning just a 49.150. The final counting scores were a 9.825 and 9.75.

Georgia had even more trouble on vault, earning just a 48.40 rotation score and having to count scores from one of two falls. The Bulldogs were led by Lily Smith, who tied her season-high with a 9.85 and 9.80 scores by Ashlyn LaClair and Naya Howard, who made her first appearance of the season of vault. The final counting scores were a 9.75 and a 9.20 (fall).

With the win in their grasp, I felt confident Missouri would do well on a vault where just a week earlier they hit their program record. I was slightly surprised to see Kyra Burns, who put down a career-best 9.90 last week, missing from the lineup — Shannon did say she struggles a bit with plantar fasciitis — and more surprised Hannah Horton back so soon as we thought she’d likely be another week, but it worked out.

Sienna got Mizzou started off on the right foot with a solid 9.825 and a stuck landing on her Yurchenko full, which earned her two 9.85 & two 9.80 scores from the judges. Grace Anne followed with a 9.825 of her own YF with the same score breakdowns, before Kennedy tied her season high with a 9.85 on her YF. One judge awarded her a 9.90 to go with two 9.85 and a 9.90. Amari earned 9.85 scores across the board on her Yurchenko 1.5, and Jocelyn followed with the Tigers’ common score of the apparatus, a 9.825 (same split as Si & GAD) on her Y 1.5.

Not only did Hannah make her triumphant return to the lineup in the anchor spot with her Yurchenko 1 1⁄2 ( Y 1.5), but she also nabbed the highest score with a 9.90 (judges scores: 9.95 & 3x 9.90) and tied for 4th place overall with six other competitors in the conference.

Final Thoughts

As I mentioned first thing, it was quite a thrill to see the Tigers put together what I would consider to be four full rotations of goodness. Yes, some of the scores were a bit on the lower side, but it wasn’t because of major mistakes or falls. I feel so unbelievably confident in this team and cannot wait to watch them on tv in Gainesville in the NCAA Regionals.
Now that the first two rounds have passed, let’s see how everyone is doing in the bracket

Hey, basketball fans! It’s check in time! What a tournament it has been so far! 13 lower seeded teams claimed victory in the first two rounds and I, for one, love to see it. I love an upset, especially when it’s teams like kU and Auburn losing and teams like NC State — WE ARE ALL MOHAMED DIARRA FANS HERE — continuing to advance.

Who else has mildly enjoyed watching the SEC be a laughingstock? And does that make you feel better or worse about Mizzou’s season? The memes have been amazing.

Some fun facts, per ncaa.com, regarding the Sweet 16:

6 previous National Champs are still playing (Zona, UConn, Duke, Marquette, UNC, NC State), but only one of these remaining has won the natty in the last five years— UConn

6 teams who have made it to the Final Four remain: Zags, Houston, Illini, Iowa State, Purdue and SD State, while 4 teams made it to the Sweet 16 who have never made a F4: Alabama, Clemson, Creighton and Tennessee.

Auburn, who lost in the second round (sorry, Bruce Pearl, lol), is the only AP top 10 team who didn’t advance. kansas is the only team not to advance that was ranked AP no. 1 at some point this season. 3 teams didn’t get a single vote in the preseason T-25 still remain: Clemson, Iowa State, NC State.

Purdue’s record this season against teams who are in the Sweet 16— 7-0. They’ve beaten Gonzaga, Tennessee, Marquette, Arizona, Alabama, and Illinois 2x. Come on, Boilers. I believe in you.

Duke is the only team so far that has a women’s and men’s Sweet 16 berth lined up, but more — #3 UConn (facing #6 Syracuse), #7 Creighton (facing #2 UCLA), #4 Gonzaga (facing #5 Utah), #3 NC State and #6 Tennessee (facing each other)— have the chance to make it in tonight when the ladies wrap up the Round of 32 play. As I type this, the Wolfpack are up on the Lady Vols 33-29 midway through the 2nd quarter.

Conference-wise, here’s where we stand:

What awaits them in The Swamp? The Tigers will officially take the podium at 6pm on Friday, April 5 on ESPN+ against no. 4 seed and host school Florida, no. 20 Georgia, and the winner of the play-in meet, no. 30 Clemson or no. 36 Iowa State. Per Florida’s site, the Gators will start on vault, Clemson/Iowa State on bars, Georgia on beam, and Missouri on floor. I think, going off of the SECs rotation that UGA followed puts them on Floor —> Vault —> Bars —> Beam. I hate beam last but you know what? It doesn’t matter.

Some quick hits:

Mizzou is coming off a fifth place finish at the SEC Championships with a 197.250, just missing on the fourth place slot by 0.025. I don’t want to spend too much time on the recap here, but Mizzou had their best beam rotation since early February, so they’re back on track.

Florida is coming off a surprising fourth place finish at the SEC Championships, earning a 197.300, which is their second lowest score of the season. Florida has shown some flashes this season, such as their 198.225 on the road at Kentucky in early March and 198.15 at home vs. LSU at the end of February, but largely has spent the season in the 197.3-197.9 range. The Tigers last saw the Gators at the Zou to the Lou meet in mid-February. You can read about it here.

Georgia, who was in Missouri’s session at the SEC Championships, had a rough floor and vault rotation (both sub-49) before coming back strong on bars and beam. They finished last in the session with a 196.075, which is far below what they’re capable of. Prior to this meet, they had two other meets in March with mid-197 scores.

Clemson is coming off a second place finish at the ACC Championships, where they scored a 196.425. They’ve scored two 197s this season, including a 197.600 at home vs. Air Force in early March, and a 197.35 at home vs. Carolina in late February.

Iowa State is coming off a fourth place finish at the Big 12 Championships, where they scored a 196.35. The Cyclones have yet to break a 197 this season, with their highest scores being a 196.90 against BYU in mid-January and a 196.70 in a quad meet in March.

Should the Tigers place in the top two — which they should barring any gymcastrophes— they’ll then face the top two from the day’s first session, which includes no. 5 Utah, no. 10 Michigan State, no. 21 Towson, and no. 26 Maryland on Sunday, April 7 (also my birthday!) at 5pm.

Here’s the whole bracket. And I’ll have MUCH more here at Rock M Nation, with previews, pressers, and a recap from the SEC Championships.

LSU avoids the sweep with a 3-2 victory over the home Tigers

The Missouri Tigers (25-7, 4-5 SEC) had their chances to give Louisiana State their fifth consecutive loss and sweep the no. 2/3 Tigers, but ultimately, countless unforced errors led to their undoing.

While I disliked LSU’s uniforms on Sunday— that gold and bright purple was quite garish— the staff’s shoe game did catch my attention after the national anthem. I spy custom Air Forces, Jordan 1 highs, and multiple Dunks. Nicely done, Bengals.

In the first, Chauntice Phillips didn’t get a great read in left on a triple by Ciara Briggs to left field and a subsequent wild pitch by Mizzou starter Laurin Krings (8-5) allowed the Bayou Bengals to take the early lead in this one, 1-0.

In the third, Sierra Daniel smoked a one-out single up the middle for a single, and then advanced to second on a groundout by Karli Petty. Ciara Briggs then hit a bloop single to Alex Honnold in center, who made a diving grab, but bobbled the ball and it came out of her glove, extending the inning and tying the game, 2-2.

In the sixth, shortstop Jenna Laird was unable to get her glove down on a hit by Ali Newland, and a five pitch walk to Taylor Pleasants followed to put two on. What followed was weird. LF Mya Dodge’s throw of the Kelley Lynch single was only slightly off-line, but it bounced off Newland’s foot and launched itself into the LSU dugout, allowing Pleasants to score, giving the visiting Tigers a 4-3 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. One inning, two errors, and two runs. Yikes.

When asked about the weird call after the game, Mizzou head coach Larissa Anderson said she’s still trying to get clarification on exactly what IS obstruction in 2024. The umpire called obstruction and then the deflection went into the dugout, so that was why they got two bases— it was dead ball.

“I asked if I could review the obstruction call and either way, the run would have scored because we didn’t have her out... I don’t think it was an obstruction, so I’d like to some clarification on that interpretation. But either way, we’ve got to make a better throw in that situation because we did have plenty of time to be able to get her out.”

It wasn’t all bad, however, as the Tigers were able to execute two double plays. In the second inning, after a ball got over the head of Laird and Phillips couldn’t get a glove on it, LSU got one runner on, which set up a gorgeous Kara Daly-led 5-4-3 double play to put two away, and in the top of the fourth, Laird made a helluva grab to secure the Tigers’ second double play. Watch.

And finally, in the seventh, Daly made another great play — she had a great day in the field Sunday — an incredible backhanded grab of a foul ball over the Missouri dugout railing to secure the first out.

Weirdly enough, Mizzou’s runs also came off of LSU unforced errors as well. It was necessary, as the offense wasn’t really firing on all cylinders Sunday.

In the bottom of the second, down 1-0, Mizzou struck back after Daly led off with a hit by pitch. Katie Chester, who had three strikeouts in Game 2, then launched a homer to left center, giving the home Tigers the 2-1 lead. They had chances to get additional runs after Madison Walker worked a killer 9-pitch at-bat smashing the cover off of foul ball after foul ball, before launching a missile at a diving Ciara Briggs in center. Phillipps also worked an awesome at-bat which I think was somewhere around 10 pitches that ultimately resulted in a walk. Kayley Lenger followed with a grounder down the third base line that somehow stayed fair and the runners moved to second and third, forcing Lynch out of the game. With Berzon in the circle, Laird worked a 5-pitch walk to load the bases for Honnold, but she hit a slow roller to 2B Karli Petty and couldn’t quite beat the throw.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers again roared back, as Julia Crenshaw led off with a double as Briggs, the two-time Gold Glover who had 306 consecutive catches without an error, dropped the ball. A Daly groundout advanced Crenshaw to third, and another LSU error, this time by Petty at 2B, allowed Maddie Gallagher to reach first and Crenshaw to score, making it 3-2 Missouri.

In the bottom of the seventh, down one run, the Tigers got another chance at life. After a strikeout, pinch hitter Stefania Abruscato was hit by pitch, and was replaced on the basepaths by Claire Cahalan. Laird then hit into a fielder’s choice, which took out the lead runner, before Honnold singled to right with the winning run aboard. Unfortunately, Crenshaw grounded out to second, ending the chance for a sweep for good.

“We didn’t necessarily swing the bat really well today,” Anderson said post-game. “I mean, we only had three hits. We’ve got to be a little bit more productive and have more quality at-bats. I thought the first time through the lineup we were pretty productive. And then we kind of into a lull and we gave them a lot of easy outs. The conversation would have been the same (in the locker room) regardless of a win or a loss, but having the opportunity to win it, I mean, that’s what you want to do late in the game. You want to get the winning run up to bat and we just weren’t able to capitalize and have a quality at-bat in that situation.”

As for Missouri’s starter, Laurin Krings was more of herself in this one (thank God) after hitting a bit of a rough patch her last couple games. In her 5.2 innings, Krings allowed seven hits (notably, no homers) and just one walk to go with two earned runs and two strikeouts.

When asked about her ace’s performance — YES, she’s still the ace, you guys— Anderson said, “Her (Krings} off-speed was really strong today, so it was extremely effective. She was able to spin the ball a little more,” before adding that she’d still like to see more swing and misses from her and the rest of the staff.

“I still don’t think we were in great command the whole weekend from both sides of the plate. We’re going to have to be able to make some adjustments with our pitching staff to be able to throw inside on left-handed hitters. I thought the balls that we tried to get in were left over the heart of the plate a little bit too much, which is why they were hit hard.”

The Bayou Bengals also adjusted their lineup a bit in an attempt to jumpstart their offense, starting with Karli Petty, who moved from the 5-hole to the leadoff, and Taylor Pleasants, who moved from 3rd to 5th, and it worked. And just like the previous game, head coach Beth Torina brought in Sydney Berzon in a relief role after giving her starter a tight leash — this time it was Kelley Lynch, who lasted just 1 2⁄3 innings — a move that also largely worked out for the visiting Tigers. Since her uncharacteristic start in Game 1, Berzon has been back to her old self, and largely silenced the Tigers’ bats, allowing only two hits and one unearned run to go with three strikeouts and only one walk in her 5.1 innings of work.

Despite the letdown of being unable to complete the sweep, this was an awesome weekend for the no. 15/16 Tigers and showed they are a force to be reckoned with. I suspect the new polls, typically released Monday-Tuesday, will show this as well.

“It’s huge for the program. It’s huge as a team,” sophomore Katie Chester said after the game about the series win. “We fought, and we’re going to continue to fight and prove that we can play up there with teams like that. We didn’t prove who we were against Tennessee, and we proved who we were against LSU.”

Anderson agreed. “It’s huge to take the series. We’re extremely excited about how we performed this weekend, to be able to take two of three wins from LSU. I mean, LSU is an extremely strong team. And it just elevated our game, and to be able to bounce back after a Tennessee sweep and to be able to shed some life on how well we can perform and what the expectations and standards are in the program.”

She continued. “We know where we’re capable of playing and we just have to continue to carry this momentum and just get better every single outing that we are out there. We’re not putting all three pieces together at the same time... that we’ll hit really, really well, and then we’re not playing great defense. And we’ll pitch really well and we’re not scoring enough runs, so we need all three aspects working at the same time to really get cooking. I think we’re really close.”

Next up: Mizzou heads out for their east coast road trip, where they’ll face Fordham and Hofstra in Hempstead, NY on Tuesday at 1pm and 3:30pm, and then head to DC (Fairfax, VA) to face George Mason on Thursday at 3pm, before ending the road trip at Villanova (Philadelphia, PA) Saturday at 9am.

On the trip, Anderson said, “It’s exciting for me personally, you know, going back to the east coast and going back to where I started by career at Hofstra. I’m extremely proud to play in that stadium again. I’m really excited for our New York kids to be able to play in front of their home crowd. I think it’s awesome for them... I know it’s going to be packed against an SEC team and it’s something that they’re going to remember for the rest of their lives. I also want our players to experience the Northeast. A lot of them have never been to New York City. They’ve never been to Washington, DC and Philadelphia.”

Per Mizzou Head Coach Shannon Walker, who the media spoke to on Wednesday, “We’ve wrapped up the regular season and kind of moved into postseason play now and so we’re excited about that and should be a good trip down to New Orleans and then we’ll get ready for some NCAA stuff after that.”

Because they finished 6th in the SEC, they will be in the afternoon session of the two-part meet, facing off against #12 Arkansas, #14 Auburn and #18 Georgia. The goal, of course, is to win this session and then also take out any number of teams in the evening session.

Missouri, as it has already been mentioned, scored its season high, 197.600 on the road at Illinois last weekend, which broke the 197.525 attained at the final dual of the season against Arkansas. The Tigers appear to be on an incline, working their way to that glittery 198 score we all want to see so badly. MAKE IT HAPPEN! (No pressure.)

Below is the Tigers’ individual rotation breakdowns for each meet. I’ll go through the info a bit more thoroughly for Mizzou’s opponents, as I’m not showing all their graphs. But here is Mizzou’s in all its glory. Draw whatever conclusions you’d like.

As for the opponents:

Arkansas finally reached the 198 threshold this past week at home vs. Nebraska when they scored a 198.100 team score. Before that, frankly, they’ve been all over the place. Who IS Arkansas? Are they this 198 team? Are they a low-to-mid 197 team? I know they’re not really a 196 team, but they had some 196 scores into mid-February. I think they’re more a mid-to-high 197 team. They’re so inconsistent I have a hard time believing they’re better than Missouri. The GymBacks had a helluva meet last weekend, with a season best on Vault (49.55), Bars (49.525), and Floor (49.725).

Prior to the 49.55 vault/49.525 bars score, Arkansas was comfortably scoring in the 49.30-49.40 range on each apparatus, so are they high scores outliers, or are they going to stick with this level of performance? Guess we’ll see! As for beam, they are more inconsistent than Mizzou, and that’s truly saying something. Their high score was against our Tigers, and they haven’t gotten particularly close to it since, so they seem to be more of a 49.30 team (their last two scores) than the 49.575. I am comfortable stating that Arkansas is a very good floor team, however. That 49.725 last week was even higher than Mizzou’s Fab Floor 49.700. They excel on FX. Should be a battle between the Hogs and the Tigers on who is the most fabulous.

Auburn may have beaten Missouri earlier in the season, but I cannot be convinced this is a better team than our Tigers. They’ve got a high 196-low 197 in early March and a 197.425 against the Tigers in mid-to-late February, but I just can’t read them. Basically, I ain’t scared of these Tigers. The Blue & Orange’s vault scores look a lot like Mizzou’s honestly just by graph alone, where they started pretty well, then peaked and then went into a valley. When they’re good — the 49.50 achieved in early February indicates there’s potential, but the closest they’ve gotten to that has been a bunch of 49.25-49.275 scores, and the last three weeks have been 49.00-49.175 scores.

On bars, I’m calling them a 49.3-49.325 team, as this is where you’ll typically find the Tigers, and they topped out at 49.40 last week, so maybe they’re at that level now? Moving on to Beam. I’m confident in calling Auburn a good beam team at this point, as all of their scores over the past month+ have been 49.325 or higher, including their last two scores of 49.475 (last week) and 49.425. Floor has been a roller coaster for the Tigers and I don’t know what to think of them. Are they a 49.5 team (probably?), or are they a 49.3-49.45ish team? Your guess is as good as mine.

Georgia is on the upswing... maybe? The Dawgs have had to really pull themselves together this season after being decimated by injuries, so kudos to them for getting back into it. They scored a 197.45 in their last meet, and a 197.55 two meets before that, but alternating in between are 196 scores.

On Vault, it seems we can count on them to get in the mid-49.2 range and are coming off a 49.225 last week, and on bars they’ve had several 49.4 scores, and are coming off a 49.325 last week. Beam looks to be on the promising side, with 49.4 scores in 2⁄3 of the previous meets. (Their beam scores are what I think Mizzou should regularly be doing.) Crazily enough, they only have ONE score this season under 49.10... couldn’t be us (Mizzou). Floor has been very consistently in the 49.45-49.475 range, so that’s decent.

Analysis

Presenting... my life’s work. It’s all led up to this moment— the master list. I went through Road to Nationals (a great website) and ranked the highest scores by each of the four teams (Mizzou, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia) and then secondarily by their national qualifying score. The decision on alternates, which are listed in light green, are based on Shannon’s comments from the recent presser and the amount of lineups the others have participated in. For instance, if they were in the last meet lineup, that’s a good indication of if they’ll be in it going forward, unless the coaching staff just decides to blow things up in postseason. In which case... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I TRIED SO HARD, Y’ALL. Anyway, below the chart is some more Mizzou-specific notes.

VAULT: A few questions here— is Hannah back? Is Kyra staying in the lineup? I asked Shannon about these very things in Wednesday’s press conference.

On Kyra Burns: “Kyra,” he said, “she’s our secret weapon and then just saved her... We’re just careful with her foot. Sometimes she’s had a little bit of plantar fascia or some little things in there. And we just think, from experience, we know we can’t do it too many times. So we do kind of purposely wait until I feel like, hey this is a time when she can be really impactful for us. She had been looking really good in the gym and working hard and we were able to get, you know, a certain number of repetitions to get ready to compete... We had a two week winder there and we really pusher her hard to get ready and she did and she responded well to it and we’re excited about the opportunity to potentially give her more chances in that vault lineup moving forward.

On Hannah: “We really were considering just warming her up a little bit but she had done well enough in the meet. When I talk to a student athlete you can have a good sense of their competence level and I felt like she felt confident in what she was doing in wanting to compete at least exhibition. She did a good job with it just took a little bit of a small step backwards, but it was pretty, pretty solid... We’re just taking one day at a time with her a little bit. But honestly, we’re just not going to be committed to rushing her right because we’re going to want her back in that vault lineup. You can only go so fast. And so if it’s ready for this weekend, awesome. We may give it a roll this weekend, and if it’s not ready for this weekend, and we’ll wait till the next one. I was really proud of Hannah and I think her teammates were as well.”

On the team’s program high performance: “We worked hard the last couple of weeks and really put some work into some of the landings and just some of those things. We went 49.5, a school record, and we really only stuck one vault, right? Joci was right there like real close and Amari was real close and Sienna was real close. So that’s good. That’s progress, right? But that was a bunch of people that only like a half 10th right versus maybe a full 10th over there.”

BARS: I expect no changes here. Shannon said bars was a little off last week, and I’d say I agree but I didn’t see anything but like a trio of dismounts (thanks, B1G+). “It was just we didn’t stick a couple of dismounts and if we stick more dismounts, and we’re right where we were capable of.”

BEAM: Regarding the beam struggles, Shannon said, “Obviously, we talked about it at length on beam, but I do feel like beam was better. And what I mean by that is, you know, look, we had we had four routines that were really at the caliber that we’re capable of, and we just had two that were, you know, obviously a little off and so that I feel like is progress in comparison to you know, five routines being kind of mediocre, right? And so there is progress there. I know the outcome is the same right now, but I definitely think that what we’re seeing is showing that we were almost there, like we’re right there, right and so there’s a lot of positive. “

“We’re not giving up on trying to find solutions to do that. Obviously we’re making changes because we feel like what we’re doing can be better, and so we’re willing to make those changes. We felt like there were other people out there that could step up and do the job. And they did in many cases.”

On getting Rayna back on beam: “I do think Rayna will be competitive for a spot on beam this week. I feel like she’s looking pretty good. And she’s excited to get back over there and feeling better (she wasn’t feeling well last week and so they let her rest). I’ve seen some good things from Rayna and she feels confident so I definitely feel like she’s in the mix for maybe slotting in and (then) obviously that means somebody comes out.”

FLOOR: I expect no changes here.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re as good as any team in our session on whatever event we hit, right?” —Mizzou Head Coach Shannon Welker

OVERALL: The team continues to perform at a very high level, and they are doing a lot of things great. Bars has been great, Floor is consistently incredible, Vault was great last week. There have been some great individual performances on beam, just not all at the same time— Sienna’s 10, Sydney’s 9.90, Amari and Grace Anne’s 9.925, Amaya’s 9.875 —were all objectively awesome. Now it’s time to put them together. Like, all at once.

Shannon reminded us, “Good to Great is a very hard step.” It is challenging, he said, and right now there’s a little bit of great here and there, but they just need to fill in the gaps a little bit. “It’s no different than football, like you have a great offense,” he said. “Well, you got to get a great defense, right? It doesn’t always happen in the same year or at the same time, but I certainly think that we’re moving in that direction.”

“Good to Great is a very big step. We just have to fill in the gaps a bit” —Shannon Welker

On the team’s ultimate goals in this meet: “We just want to take a step forward,” Shannon said. “That’s the goal. You know, our goal from the beginning of the year is to is to perform at a level that are at least close to our maximum potential. And so, we have shown flashes of brilliance, right? I mean, just really impressive stuff. Look, we have three events that are top 12 in the country floor is number 8. That’s impressive stuff like that’s some of the that’s TopTier stuff, right? We just got to get a little more consistency.”

Back in their home ballpark, it’s time for the Tigers to face off against yet another Tiger. It worked well last time, so let’s hope for the same.

Your no. 15/16 Missouri Tigers (23-6) are coming off 1-3 week where they only managed just two runs in three games against no. 8 Tennessee.

When we asked Larissa about the team’s hiccups in the Volunteer State during Tuesday’s media availability, she had this to say: “I’m not even going to sugarcoat anything other than we were exposed, and we needed to play better. We didn’t really put any of the pieces together, and our pitching go hit really hard. Our defense fell apart and that’s usually a strength of our team. We didn’t make plays when we needed to. And when you’re playing against a top 10 team, you can’t give them more than three outs. And there were so many times we were giving them 5-6-7 outs because we weren’t making plays behind our pitching staff.”

They did, however, beat no. 20 kU on the road in Lawrence in the midweek, and a bevy of Tiger pitchers — CC Harrison (4 innings), Laurin Krings (2 innings) and Taylor Pannell (1 inning, save) — got to get some action.

This weekend, the Tigers are back home in CoMo, ready to face another set of Tigers, this time purple and gold (weird color scheme for a Tiger, if you ask me) who are coming off a series loss to the only unranked team in the SEC, Ole Miss. These Bayou Bengals are tough, and the two aforementioned losses were their first of the season.

Anderson expressed on Tuesday how difficult the travel has been recently, and so being home is especially welcoming since it allows them to have hitting, and be live in the field and have a defensive group. “These past few weeks have been really tough for preparation because we’ve done so much travel,” she said. “So we haven’t really had a lot of practice time. We’re not getting a lot of live situations and repetition and it’s literally, take some reps and hop on a plane and so that’s been really tough in terms of our preparation.”

NOTES FROM LARISSA’S TUESDAY PRESSER:

On the weekend’s pitching woes: “They didn’t miss our pitchers’ mistakes. They jumped all over the ball if it was over the plate. So that’s where our pitchers need to learn a little bit more on where to throw in competitive at-bats.

On Laurin Krings’ struggles in Game One of the UT series: “This is the first time (Krings) being in the number one role in her entire career. She hadn’t been the ace and now it’s a different responsibility... it was more mental than anything. We had an awesome conversation yesterday (Monday) on what it’s like to be the number one, what it’s like to be the leader, like everyone’s looking to you. And the team needs you to have your A game every single game. That doesn’t mean you’re going to be striking out double-dight people. It’s going to be, you’re competitive every single game.”

“And in that Friday game, when the defense wasn’t making plays behind her, it gets a little demoralizing as pitcher. It’s like, ‘What more can I do?’ And immediately a pitcher wants to be relieved. So the conversation on the mound was I’m not coming to get you, you got to battle your way through this. So it was challenging her to be able to overcome some of that adversity that she was facing”

On the offense: “We have to do a better job of getting on time. You know, we continue to get caught in between the hard and soft stuff. And we need to be able to pick one side of the plate especially when you’re facing an All-American because you can’t hit everything.”

“We just don’t want to see three pitch at-bats, six pitch innings... like those types of things. We want to extend the at-bats and as much as we possibly can and make the pitcher work.”

On the defense: “Defensively, I felt like we just sat back on our heels. Again, Tennessee is not going to give you a game and we’ve got to lay out for ball and we’ve got to make more aggressive plays and take the game from them because they’re not going to give it to you.”

On the silver linings: “I think on Friday we had a lot of walks. That was a really good thing. We had a number of people on base— I think we left 11 on base— so people were on but we were shut down. We just didn’t have very good situational hitting in those situations. Daly had some really good at-bats on Sunday, because we need her and she dropped the ball in the middle of the field, which isn’t something she’s been able to do lately. That was good progress to be able to see, especially from someone who is throwing 72-74 mph.”

On the freshmen: They have such unbelievable personalities with so much energy, excitement. They’re invested in each other, that it becomes really contagious. And then with throughout the course of the game. Their attention to detail and their investment to see their teammates succeed, carries over to every aspect of the game. You don’t get that on a lot of teams. And I think that’s why our team is so successful right now and our culture is so unbelievable, because they truly care about one another.”
