Missouri is still searching for its quarterback for the 2017 recruiting class

A program should have a quarterback in every recruiting class, and Missouri is still searching for its guy.

With the news that Davis Mills committed to "the Farm" yesterday, Mizzou is down to one uncommitted target. If you check out our Recruiting Big Board, you'll see that the only other known QB offer out is to Hendon Hooker out of North Carolina. Hooker recently visited Notre Dame and 247 has him as a strong lean toward the Fighting Irish.

Of the four quarterbacks on Mizzou's roster, three-star Marvin Zanders committed in August of his recruiting cycle, four-star Drew Lock committed in April, three-star Micah Wilson pledged just days before National Signing Day, and two-star JUCO Jack Lowary was a post-NSD addition. Outside of Mizzou, there's currently a trend of high profile quarterback prospects committing early in the process -- it is thought to help stabilize the classes as they can turn around and help recruit future teammates.

Where does that leave Mizzou?

We have been keeping tabs on Taylor Powell, a three-star prospect out of Fayetteville, Ark. We know the coaches are aware of him, as several follow him on twitter (including Glen Elarbee, who'd be familiar with him from his time at Arkansas State). 247sports has Powell a lean to Arkansas, but the recent commitment of Daulton Hyatt or an offer from Mizzou could change things.

Even if Mizzou does end up offering Powell, they're going to need to expand their search. I asked our recruiting guy, Ethan Triebsch for some other names he think's could be in line for offers.

That's just an initial list. We'll be keeping an eye for new offers in the coming weeks as Josh Heupel attempts to find the next quarterback for his offense.

Unofficial Visitors

We caught you up on some weekend visitors in our Sunday recruiting update, which included updates 2017 offensive lineman Marquis Hayes and a pair of 2018 targets in offensive guard TJ Kennedy and defensive end Daniel Parker.

Barry Odom's Tigers held closed practice Tuesday, which meant no media were allowed in. But at least one big 2017 target was, unofficially, in attendance.

Xavier Newman is a 6'4, 285-pound offensive tackle/offensive guard from DeSoto, Texas, who picked up an offer a month ago. Newman really impressed in the The Opening Regional, earning MVP honors. His film is ... impressive, to say the least.

Intrepid reporter Mark Kim actually caught a glimpse of him doing a tour of the Student Center with Glen Elarbee. Missouri has offers to Newman and several of his DeSoto teammates, including offensive lineman Edward Ingram and Hyrin White.

PowerMizzou's Brian Austin has the full story $$$ DeSoto (TX) trio visiting Mizzou.

Continuing that trend, Missouri will be unofficially hosting at least one other visitor during Thursday's open practice.

The Leitao name may be familiar because of Dave Leitao, an assistant coach under Mike Anderson. Reece Leitao is a 3-star tight end according to Rivals.
