From Gillespie’s original commitment piece:
Gillespie is an interesting prospect in that he is kind of a recruiting afterthought — two stars via both Rivals and the 247Sports Composite — but from the standpoint of stats and physical measures, he looks great. His Hudl film is just a mix tape of long, explosive runs, and his stats back that up: Per MaxPreps, in two years, he carried the ball 47 times for 660 yards (that’s 14.0 yards per carry) and seven scores. He also picked off two passes in 2016. His measurables are also solid.
Why Gillespie is only listed as a two-star prospect isn’t immediately obvious. He appears to have the athleticism and highlight film you would look for in at least a mid-three-star guy. Alas, recruiting rankings cease to matter when you show up on campus.
As with the other defensive backs in this class, Gillespie will be part of a crowded pool of guys vying for playing time. The potential is immense, but almost no player is truly proven. Playing time available.
WELCOME, TYREE.
