The transfer portal has been a really nice tool that Eli Drinkwitz and his staff have used to add talent to this roster. They’ve signed two high-end transfers who both have four years of eligibility remaining in EJ Ndoma-Ogar and Mookie Cooper. We’ve talked for the longest time about Missouri finding ways to improve the elite talent on this roster, and this was an excellent start, signing two guys who were previously four star recruits out of high school.
That being said, I don’t think Drink is finished adding guys, and I decided to look through the portal and see what may be out there. I found some guys who Missouri will- or probably should, at least- reach out to.
A Player to Watch: Ayodele Adeoye (ILB)
The former four star prospect of Ritenour High School in St. Louis was recruited heavily by Barry Odom and his previous staff. He went on to sign with Texas, and played with mixed results. In his time in Austin, Adeoye struggled to see consistent playing time, mostly because of injury. In three years, he played 19 games and had 10 total starts, all of which came during his redshirt freshman season in 2019.
Ayodele Adeoye came to Texas as a highly-regarded prospect, but suffered three significant injuries during three seasons. If he can stay healthy, he could be a strong contributor in a more smash-mouth conference like the Big Ten. He was solid even in the Big 12 when healthy.— Wescott Eberts (@SBN_Wescott) January 8, 2021
Adeoye has natural athletic ability, along with a nose for the football. He’s somewhat average in coverage, but he’s above average in athleticism, which tells me that it’s not that he couldn’t do it physically, but was maybe thinking just a bit too much. He’s a good player with some room to grow, but I just wonder if he was utilized correctly in Texas’ scheme.
This is probably a position of need for the Tigers with the departure of Nick Bolton. I’m expecting the Missouri staff to reach out and gauge his interest level on a return home. He’ll definitely have options, but I think he’s a top priority for the Mizzou in the next couple weeks.
A Position to Watch: Tight End
It’s been pretty quiet all over the portal in most positions. Guys have either already made the decision of where they would transfer to, or are waiting to see how signing day shakes out in February. The exception to this is at tight end.
There are an unusually large amount of highly recruited TE’s available, and a few from the SEC. The crown jewel is Arik Gilbert from LSU, who Missouri fans should know pretty well by now as he torched Mizzou in their contest earlier in the year. He’s figuring to have a long line of suitors from all over the place. You could also look in the direction of Jacob Mathis, a one time Ole Miss signee who’s leaving USF. Then, there’s former Tennessee Vol in Jackson Lowe. Both were four star recruits coming out of high school, and look to have some really nice physical traits that could make them intriguing for Missouri.
The Tight end position at face value isn’t high on the list of needs with two tight end commits in 2021 (Gavin McKay and Ryan Hoerstkamp) , and one already committed in 2022 (Max Whisner), but you can never have enough “dudes” on your team. One has to wonder if the Tigers dip their toe in the waters with any of these prospects and see if at least there may be fit.
