And the process of answering questions begins.
(Key 2014 contributors in bold, walk-ons with asterisks.)
Offense
QB
Maty Mauk (6'0, 195, Jr.)
Eddie Printz (6'3, 205, So.)
Corbin Berkstresser (6'3, 210, Sr.)
Marvin Zanders (6'1, 185, RSFr.)
No surprises here.
RB
Russell Hansbrough (5'9, 195, Sr.)
Ish Witter (5'10, 190, So.)
Tyler Hunt (5'11, 210, Sr.)
Trevon Walters (5'10, 200, RSFr.)
Morgan Steward (INJURED)
With Morgan Steward still on the injured list, it's currently between Hunt and Walters for the No. 3 spot.
WR-X
J'Mon Moore (6'3, 190, So.)
Eric Laurent (6'2, 215, Jr.)*
DeSean Blair (6'3, 190, RSFr.)
WR-H
Nate Brown (6'3, 205, So.)
Thomas Richard (6'1, 190, RSFr.)
WR-Z
Wesley Leftwich (6'1, 205, Sr.)
Jake Brents (6'3, 205, Jr.)*
Keyon Dilosa (6'3, 200, RSFr.)
Minimal surprises here, though Blair and Dilosa will have to battle past a couple of walk-ons before they can threaten the first string.
TE
Sean Culkin (6'6, 245, Jr.)
Jason Reese (6'5, 250, So.)
Clayton Echard (6'5, 260, Sr.)*
Kendall Blanton (6'6, 250, RSFr.)
Austin Ray (6'4, 245, So.)*
Minimal surprises here, too, though the Echard (blocking) vs. Blanton (catching) battle will be situation-specific.
LT
Taylor Chappell (6'5, 305, Sr.)
Paul Adams (6'6, 290, RSFr.)
Malik Cuellar (6'5, 300, Jr.)
LG
Mitch Hall (6'5, 310, Sr.)
Kevin Pendleton (6'4, 315, RSFr.)
Mike Fairchild (6'5, 295, RSFr.)
Brad McNulty (INJURED)
C
Evan Boehm (6'3, 320, Sr.)
Alec Abeln (6'3, 290, So.)
Andy Bauer (6'3, 310, RSFr.)
RG
Connor McGovern (6'4, 305, Sr.)
Jordan Williams (6'3, 290, Sr.)
RT
Clay Rhodes (6'5, 290, So.)
Nate Crawford (6'5, 300, So.)
Sam Bailey (6'5, 270, RSFr.)
Tanner Owen (6'5, 280, Fr.)
And the first parry has Chappell moving from right to left tackle while the two athletic sophomores battle for RT. If you're thinking about things in "move the most experienced guy to the left tackle spot," then this makes sense. And again, it will be interesting to see how quickly Malik Cuellar gets up to speed.
Defense
DE
Marcus Loud (6'4, 260, So.)
Rocel McWilliams (6'2, 240, RSFr.)
Walter Brady (6'3, 255, RSFr.)
DT
Harold Brantley (6'3, 280, Jr.)
Rickey Hatley (6'4, 285, Jr.)
NG
Josh Augusta (6'4, 345, Jr.)
Evan Winston (6'3, 300, Jr.)
A.J. Logan (6'2, 300, So.)
DE
Charles Harris (6'3, 255, So.)
Spencer Williams (6'3, 245, RSFr.)
THREE HUNDRED FORTY-FIVE POUNDS. JOSH AUGUSTA IS THREE HUNDRED FORTY-FIVE POUNDS.
WLB
Kentrell Brothers (6'1, 235, Sr.)
Joey Burkett (6'2, 210, So.)
Christian Williams (6'3, 250, Jr.)*
Roderick Winters (5'11, 225, RSFr.)
MLB
Michael Scherer (6'3, 230, Jr.)
Eric Beisel (6'3, 225, So.)
SLB
Donavin Newsom (6'2, 230, Jr.)
Clarence Green (6'0, 220, Sr.)
Brandon Lee (6'2, 220, RSFr.)
Grant Jones (6'3, 225, RSFr.)
I guess the primary mystery regarding the linebackers is who's positioning themselves to replace Brothers and Green in 2016.
CB
Kenya Dennis (5'11, 200, Sr.)
David Johnson (5'11, 195, Sr.)
Logan Cheadle (5'10, 180, So.)
CB
Aarion Penton (5'10, 190, Jr.)
John Gibson (6'0, 190, Jr.)
Raymond Wingo (5'11, 180, RSFr.)
Finis Stribling IV (5'11, 175, RSFr.)
No surprises here.
