Pinkel on young MU defensive linemen: "Never had a group of young guys be at that kind of level”

Here are today's Mizzou Links.

I'll give you one guess. @MizzouFootball Rides Defense, Special Teams to 9-6 Win Over UConn

Pinkel on car crash Friday involving Missouri players:

"Well when that happened, I was scared to death. I shot over there, trying to get through traffic and not get there too late. They're like my kids. The good news is Terry is okay. DeSean (Blair) and Keyon (Dilosa) are both okay. DeSean has a concussion, and Keyon has a bruised elbow. We were dealing with those two things with those two players. Trevon Waters is okay. He is fine. But, there was a lot going through us on Friday. I have been coaching for years, and we get everything. We get absolutely everything. The most important thing is that they are all doing well. Terry was really upset because he was driving the car. He was right in the middle of rush hour. A person pulled out in front of him, and thankfully the person in the other car is fine too. There were no serious injuries.  I thought Terry went in and played well. That is a lot for a young guy to deal with."

Mizzou Tigers pennant The defense wasn't supposed to be this good this soon

I've got a big piece coming on Missouri's offensive trainwreck. For now, more defensive happiness!

The Trib: Defense dominant again with lift from redshirt freshman Brady

"The consistency of how well our defense is playing is awesome. I didn’t expect that," Coach Gary Pinkel said. "I thought going in, especially losing Harold" Brantley — who was lost for the season after a car accident in June — "I was very concerned with us up front because we had lost so many people. But we’ve got some starters that are playing really well, and these young freshmen and redshirt freshmen defensive linemen are playing at a really high level."

Pinkel commended true freshmen Terry Beckner Jr., Nate Howard and Josh Moore.

"There’s a lot of them," the coach said. "I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I’ve never had a group of young guys be at that kind of level."

The Trib: Tigers' defense stout, offense struggling in 9-6 win over Connecticut

Post-Dispatch: Matter's Four & Out

Tough call for Eye on the Tigers MVP. Let’s go with safety Anthony Sherrils, who made the game-clinching interception on UConn’s fake field goal and also recovered a fumble earlier in the game. Sherrils was credited with the forced fumble on the same play, though it looked like Kentrell Brothers punched it loose. Either way, Sherrils made some impact plays on the back end. Remember, it was his deflection along the sideline that created Brothers’ game-clinching INT last week at Arkansas State.

"Anthony has been doing really well," Pinkel said. "He is an extraordinary athlete that has great speed and acceleration. That's why we have him returning kicks. The sky is the limit for how good he can be. Also, he's very smart and has matured a lot over the past couple of years. It's good to see him doing the things that he is doing."
