What's On
Why, 2006 Florida vs. LSU, of course!
Why? Because ... MAT(Y)LOCK.
Post-Dispatch (Ben Fredrickson): Could 'MatyLock' work at Mizzou? : Sports
Whatever awkwardness then Gators coach Urban Meyer created didn't keep the 2006 Gators from claiming all the Tostitos. Flash forward and Meyer is reserving the right to swap starter Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett at Ohio State, the team Leak/Tebow beat to claim the national championship.
"It goes back to the personnel," Meyer told reporters during Florida's title run. "They (Leak and Tebow) are both very good players. They complement each other. There (are) a lot of people that think Tim should have played more and a lot of people that said Chris should have played more.
"Without two unselfish people, that would have been a problem."
Could MatyLock handle the drama? Initial feedback out of Columbia, Mo, looked positive. Did you see Mauk rush to embrace Lock after he completed his first touchdown pass? No sulking there.
Eyes on Abeln
Post-Dispatch (Dave Matter): Tuesday Tiger Takeaways: On Mauk, running game concerns and more
Alec Abeln had an eventful first career start Saturday. He played left guard the first half then moved to center, his natural position, for the second half after Evan Boehm came out with his sprained ankle. ... At 6-3, 290 pounds, he’s the smallest player in MU’s offensive line two-deep — think Max Copeland without the hair and beard — so he has to rely on clean technique, footwork and great hands to win those 1-on-1 showdowns with bigger D-linemen. "He does have long arms even though he’s not super tall, but a guy like that has to be a great technician," Ricker said. "It’s his first start, and I get all that. But he’ll play better because he’s got that kind of demeanor."
PowerMizzou: Something to build on
"He (Abeln) had a couple protection breakdowns and just technique kind of broke down," Ricker said. "The biggest thing about the O-line is that you've got to win your one-on-one battles, and we lost a couple. We gave up way too much pressure on the quarterback."
"I think the biggest thing, negative-wise, was just focusing on things," Abeln said. "A lot of play-actions where I'd turn back against it because I didn't feel anyone, and maybe a guy leaks in late. All I had to do was stay there and not be too active. I think that's something, just finishing better. But overall, I think it was OK.
"I don't think, especially as a line unit, we didn't play terrible, but no one on the line is thrilled with how we played, either."
2 WRs in the top 9 ... that'll do
