Style points do not exist this year. Just win, baby.

The 2012 Mizzou offense is still the 2012 Mizzou offense -- iffy snaps, costly mistakes, inability to sustain a drive -- but Gary Pinkel's Tigers moved to 3-2 thanks to a dominant second half from the defense (the line looked fantastic after a mostly woeful first half), an 80-yard pass to Dorial Green-Beckham, another punt return touchdown by Marcus Murphy and just enough timely running from Kendial Lawrence.
"I don't think it's anything we're doing," T.J. Moe said. "We certainly try to take advantage of what we're good at. But they're taking it away a little bit, defenses have, and we need to start slinging it around a little bit."

"Just with the defenses coming out, respecting our offense, they're coming in and finding different techniques to cover all the things we do on offense," Kendial Lawrence said. "I think that's what it is they're doing so far."

One player seems to have the clear-cut answer for the problem. It's the player responsible for turning the play from ho-hum into a home run.

James Franklin said his mentality is at fault. On Monday, he said he needed to be more aggressive in the passing game. After his shoulder was wrenched on a throw in the Georgia game, he admitted he became tentative looking for receivers downfield. But, all season he's tried to run carefully, tiptoeing his way to yards instead of running like he did a year ago.

Another stat speaks to how conservative Missouri’s passing offense was Saturday. Of Franklin’s 18 passes, 11 were toward the boundary — the short side of the field — while three were in the middle and only four were toward the field. Franklin said his ailing shoulder — which forced him to miss the previous game — still bothered him some against the Gamecocks, so perhaps that’s why he made (or was instructed to make?) so many short, close throws. He didn’t forget how to play football overnight, so it’s obvious the injury is limiting him.

Either way, Pinkel reiterated Wednesday that he hopes to see Missouri throw the ball downfield more this week. And Franklin might want to start settling in against this "rush four, contain six" defensive look — which Georgia and South Carolina both used in wins over the Tigers — because Henson isn’t convinced it’s going anywhere, not with the defensive linemen the SEC has to offer.

"It’s the SEC, you know? That’s kind of what it’s all about, and that’s where it probably separate itself from rest of college football," Henson said. "Florida will be pretty good, Tennessee will be good, Alabama will be good, and I’m sure Vanderbilt and Kentucky will be good too … the bottom line is as not as much about who we’re playing as it is about us just playing with good fundamentals."

@MizzouJason Britt is getting destroyed at tackle. 1st UGA's Jones, then USC's Clowney. What are the coaches going to do to not expose him?

First, we're talking about what might be the two best pass-rushers in the country. They're going to beat a lot of blockers this year. And Clowney didn't destroy Britt. He beat him cleanly twice on 29 pass plays. That's two too many but Britt held his own for the bulk of that game. I'd wager you won't find another left tackle in the SEC who will be asked to block Clowney 1-on-1 for an entire game like Britt was.

@bmikekorte Why do we get excuses about the OL rather than the usual "Move 'em over & move 'em up"? Did coaches' confidences take a hit?

Pinkel definitely changed his tone on the offensive line during his session with reporters on Monday. He went out of his way to say the line played well at times at South Carolina and has made progress since dealing with the injuries. There was much less commiserating about the lack of experience and healthy bodies.

So, if you’re lovelorn, confused or curious, send your questions to oldmanfootballRMN@gmail.com and a young person will access them, print them on paper and give them to me. And then I’ll answer them, or I won’t, depending on their quality and my mood.

Before Marching Mizzou’s Blood, Sweat & Tears medley; before Blood, Sweat & Tears; before tears, because football was full of blood and sweat and men who didn’t cry, I was there, watching the game, absorbing its lore, stewing in its juices. I made whiskey in a bathtub with Lombardi, drank it with Nagurski, overthrew the dictator of a banana republic with Butkus (black ops, soon to be declassified), and drew up 65 Toss Power Trap on a diner menu and slid it across the table to Stram.

I’ve accumulated a fair amount of knowledge over those years, and some wisdom, too. The proprietors of this paperless magazine have asked me to share it with you. Apparently, I’m going to do it with some regularity. And maybe from time to time with some irregularity.

So, if you’re lovelorn, confused or curious, send your questions to oldmanfootballRMN@gmail.com and a young person will access them, print them on paper and give them to me. And then I’ll answer them, or I won’t, depending on their quality and my mood.

Let’s get this ice cream social started.

Dear Old Man Football: The other night my girlfriend and I were cuddled on the love seat under a goose-down comforter watching Dance Moms when we got into the worst argument. She said that she’d heard someone on the radio say that James Franklin wasn’t tough, and she thought that was crazy. I replied that he’s a glass figurine who plays like he’s walking on Fabergé eggshells. The next thing I knew, we were both yelling and then somehow I spilled my caramel macchiato all over my petite vanilla scones, and then she stormed out and went back to her place. So what’s the answer? Is James Franklin tough? – The Bed’s Too Big Without Her.

Dear The Bed: I might suggest that you pull your eyes away from The "Learning" Channel from time to time to watch some football. The game has changed, son. In recent weeks, a safety made a tackle and fractured his spine. A quarterback took a hit and lost part of his ear. During that time, James Franklin has been pummeled by ballerina-nimble rock formations named Jarvis Jones and Kelcy Quarles, and he’s stood in the pocket to face meteor showers disguised as pass rushes. The fact that he continues to walk upright and speak in complete sentences ought to answer the question, m’kay? Also, she’s not coming back.

Dear Old Man Football: Can you teach me how to Dougie? – Buster Dougieless.

Dear Buster: What?

Dear Old Man Football: I’ve been playing EA Sports NCAA Football 2013 on the Xbox for weeks, and my Missouri Tigers are unstoppable. James Franklin passes for 300 yards and runs for 150 every game, and we just beat Alabama by 28 points. I’m getting something out of the offense that Pinkel and Yost aren’t. Do you think I should apply for a spot on the coaching staff? It doesn’t have to be offensive coordinator or even quarterbacks coach. I’d be willing to start as a graduate assistant. – Video Coordinator.

Dear Video Coordinator: Yes, yes, I do think you should apply for a spot. Send a letter to Coach Pinkel describing your expertise just as you’ve explained it here, and then share his response with us. Get it on video if at all possible.

That said, I think you may be operating under a misunderstanding about your video game. Mind you, I don’t know much about the Xbox. I won’t play any game with a controller that has seventeen moving parts. That’s not leisure; that’s a vocation. Give me a joystick with a single red button and I’m in the tall clover. Just thinking about playing some Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 makes me feel like an ex-smoker drifting through the exhaust of an unfiltered Camel. Smoooooth.

Where was I? Oh, yes, NCAA Football 2013. I know a young person who likes to play that game. In it, Missouri’s quarterback is a rangy dual-threat athlete with medium-brown skin who wears the number 1. Despite what some might call remarkable coincidences, this is not James Franklin. We know this because the back of his jersey says "QB #1" and not "Franklin." James Franklin is an amateur, a student-athlete who plays for the love of the game and a full scholarship, and we have rules in place to protect him.

We would never exploit him to help sell a video game that retails for $44.99, just like we would never sell his jersey for $60 in the team store. I know that you’re thinking that the store does sell a jersey with the number 1 on it, but that’s simply because the Missouri Tigers are number 1, see? You might also note that the store sells a jersey with the number 28 on it, and that’s probably because Missouri ranks 28th in care for women with ovarian cancer.

The fact that you are having such success with a randomly-selected quarterback (and not James Franklin) only bolsters your case for a position on the staff.

Dear Old Man Football: I’ll be in Kansas City tonight with nothing to do. Suggestions? – Killing Time is KillingMe.

Dear Killing Time: The only reasonable thing to do is to see Nick Lowe play at Knuckleheads. The man is a treasure. I interviewed him once. And there’s nothing like the sound of a spry young troubadour punctuated by the high lonesome sound of a train whistle.

As a bonus, I will purchase a libation for the first person who identifies Old Man Football at the show.

Until next time, here’s a tribute to a man who helped provide the soundtrack to my youth.

[Tyler] Gabbert isn't dwelling on his departure from Mizzou, where his older brother, Blaine, was a two-year starter before becoming the 10th player selected overall, by the Jacksonville Jaguars, in the 2011 NFL draft.

"Not really; I've been gone from there for so long," Gabbert said by phone Tuesday morning. "All of those feelings got out of the way that past year-and-a-half or however long it's been."

Gabbert was a Mizzou teammate of his brother's when he redshirted in 2010 and opted to transfer when Franklin was named the No. 1 quarterback at MU following their competition in the spring of 2011.

"It was just the right decision for me at the time to explore other opportunities, and I'm glad I ended up at Central Florida," he said.

As for the view from Mizzou, offensive coordinator David Yost last week said, " 'Once a Tiger, always a Tiger' is kind of how we look at it."

Still, Yost joked that he was curious to know where Blaine Gabbert's allegiance might be this week and said he planned to text him to ask "what jersey he's going to wear."

The way I look at this season is the way I have always looked at this season. Success or failure will be determined by four games.

I say this assuming Missouri should beat Vandy, Kentucky and Syracuse at home. I say it feeling confident the Tigers will lose to the Crimson Tide.

Those results would put Missouri at 5-3 with four games undecided on the schedule. The first of those games comes Saturday at Central Florida.

It is a game many have viewed as a snake pit for the Tigers. You're playing a non-BCS team on the road in the biggest home game they'll have all season. It's a tough draw. It's not a game Missouri would likely schedule in just about any year. But caught in transition between the Big 12 and the SEC, the Tigers had to find someone, anyone who had an open date. The Golden Knights did and you can bet they weren't volunteering to come to Columbia just to be charitable.

Yes, this game is a potential pitfall. But, honestly, it's a game Missouri should win. IF the Tigers are the team they want to believe they are. If Mizzou can win this game and the three home games I've given them, bowl eligibility is assured. And, right now, that's the goal.

DGB
The Trib: Green-Beckham off to quiet start to freshman year

Green-Beckham was on the field for 26 of Missouri's 58 plays in the 31-10 loss, Pinkel said. Franklin and backup Corbin Berkstresser completed 18 of 26 passes, four of which were thrown to Green-Beckham. His only catch was a 9-yarder from Berkstresser on the game's final series, a 75-yard touchdown drive.

"Everyone would like to see him catch 25 balls a game and catch touchdowns and all that stuff. But he's progressing there with more reps," Hill said. "We had more plays that were scheduled to go his way, but for one reason or another, sometimes it's coverage, or sometimes the quarterback went the other way with it."

Missouri coaches don't sound panicked over Green-Beckham's slow start. They're not coddling him either.

Asked if Green-Beckham had a good attitude, Pinkel answered: "Yeah, I think so. Why? Have you noticed him walking to class being grumpy or something?"

Not that you cannot end an extended contract early, but Mizzou's extension of Tim Jamieson's contract really is, as trripleplay puts it below, a huge vote of confidence at a time when, honestly, a lot of us are struggling with confidence in the baseball program. Of course, the reason I personally struggle with confidence doesn't really have to do with Jamieson -- it has more to do with the fact that we saw some of the conference's baseball facilities this past week, and ... Mizzou has a long way to go, both in terms of department support and fan support. Fingers crossed.

In a HUGE vote of confidence, Mike Alden and the MU Athletic Department have extended Tim Jamieson's contract through 2015.

Jamieson's contract had been scheduled to conclude at the end of the current 2012-13 season, leaving room for speculation that his job security was depended on performance in the Tigers' first year in the tough Southeastern Conference.

But the AD apparently believes that the coach who led his team to the Big 12 Tournament title in 2012 deserves more of a running start in the SEC.
