Reviewing one of the great wins of the Pinkel era.

Okay, so Mizzou got a big road win, but Georgia was banged up. Now the real season begins. Again. For the fifth time. Okay, so maybe people aren't taking Mizzou seriously yet, but at least we're getting talked about!

Gary Pinkel keeps saying we haven't played our best game yet. I'd agree with that. There's a lot to like in this film, but definitely room for improvement, especially in pass blocking and linebacker play. But rather than focusing on those things, I think such a big win deserves a pat on the back, so I'll focus on the things we did right today.

Line Play

One of the things I was concerned about heading into league play was whether the line would by physical enough in SEC play. There are two ways to beat a team: either physically outclass them or execute better than them. I was worried that Mizzou's success this season was due to execution rather than physical dominance.

It's true that Georgia's maligned defense is not great. But the Bulldogs do have disruptive playmakers on the defensive line. To say the least, Mizzou held its own. On called runs, Mizzou had ZERO plays that lost yardage. Not counting the runs against the stacked box in the fourth quarter, I only counted eight runs did not pick up at least four yards and 16 that were successful. And only a couple of those involved offensive line players getting pushed aside. Ironically, it was the pass protection where they pushed us around a bit last Saturday, and that was the one area where I thought we were solid. Still, I think we're ready to compete in this league physically, and I wasn't sure about that earlier this year.

A few plays are worth pointing out here. First, some good ol' smashmouth. Against a physical SEC defensive line, this is two yards of surge before you even see contact and four yards before he's brought down. This happened multiple times.

Second, a counter with a twist. The classic counter has a back step one direction and then go immediately the other way against the blocking. Mizzou doesn't rely on a lot of misdirection other than the inside run vs. the outside bubble screen. But this is very subtle misdirection, and could easily be mistaken for a cutback if you didn't watch it a second time. What's interesting is the right guard and tackle double team their man, and left guard Max Copeland takes one little jab step to the right. The linebackers key on that blocking and flow toward that hole. As Henry Josey cuts back, Copeland has gone back left to double team the DE, while Eric Waters takes out the leverage LB, and the other LBs are caught in the traffic. It's an absolutely beautiful play, and a nice wrinkle from Josh Henson.

Now let's look at sealing the edge. Last year we spent half the season just trying to figure out who to put a hat on. This year the line is starting to do some of the stuff you expect from a high-level, experienced college line. Here you see a seal block being handed off so the tackle can then take out the LB. These guys made this look easy a few times this game, but I can't tell you how many times that inside man just can't take the handoff or the first guy rushes out of the block before it's handed off.

Tea and QBs

I am a big fan of how Gary Pinkel is managing Maty Mauk. He's taken great pains to let him know he's free to make plays. A complex position like QB can be a lot like a golf swing. You can't really master it until you've got all the little details down. But as you're learning, if you try to keep all the things you need to remember in your head at once, you inevitably hook the ball into the trees. Mauk is a playmaker by all accounts. Turn him loose and live with the highs and lows. Sure, he might throw five picks against Florida and ruin any chance we had. But we won't score a single TD if he can't play with confidence. I know the coaches are talking him up, but there wasn't much to go on. He only had one pass where he had to read the defense and choose the receiver, and that was almost an interception on a simple swing pass. Even the pass to Dorial Green-Beckham was scripted.

Almost as long as I've watched Mizzou, when key players have gone down, I tend to think, "Well, maybe the backup will step up or the other players play so well we don't miss him." I'm still waiting for that to happen. Actually that's not true. It happened once. Chase Daniel. Iowa State.

Mauk has big shoes to fill. And he'll have to do it against the best pass defense in the country with at least three surefire draft picks in the secondary. The truth is (and Florida's long litany of failed five-star QBs is proof) that quarterbacks really are like tea, as Pinkel likes to say. You don't know what you've got until you put them in hot water.

Twenty-one points. That's the magic number for me against Florida. Hit that, and I think our defense can win us the game. We've got a lot of playmakers on this offense. If Mauk can distribute the ball to them and go deep over the middle just enough to keep the defense honest, we have a good shot at that. But there I go again building up my hopes. I will say this: If Mauk does come out and move the offense against Florida and South Carolina, the ceiling on this team just went through the roof in the coming years. There I go again. I'll shut up now.

Leverage

Mizzou likes to use leverage to turn running plays back into the pursuit in the middle of the field. In the second half, they really ramped this up, including several times where they got really aggressive and forced Georgia to go straight through or over the top. It was anything but playing "not to lose." The problem with this appraoch, as is illustrated by the last clip in this sequence, is that if the linemen get a hat on a linebacker, straight-up-the-gut can go for big yardage.

Appreciating the players

You know, my normal schtick is to find high points in a loss and things to fix in a victory. But I just have to take a few moments to appreciate these players. I haven't had so much fun just appreciating the players since Danario Alexander and company graduated. James Franklin was playing at a level I wasn't sure he was capable of reaching. I think he was starting to exceed all but Chance McDanielson in the time I've watched Mizzou for the last 20 years or so. His passing might have been a touch below Blaine Gabbert's, but he made up for it with his excellent scrambling.

E.J. Gaines is the best secondary player I think I can ever remember at Mizzou, and not just in pass coverage. I never realized just how good Andrew Wilson was until this season. L'Damian Washington may be our best receiver this year. Wow, has this guy gone from "that wafer-thin guy with iffy hands" to probably getting a look from an NFL team or two. And I absolutely LOVE this stable of running backs. I could show highlights all day, and I haven't even covered the D-line, most of the receivers or the O-line. But I'll just pick a couple of running back plays that show why I love this group so much. There's not a single jitterbug move from any of the backs for the entire game. Hard to believe a Pinkel team could be this north-south.

Seriously, folks. Take a moment to appreciate these players. You'll be talking about them in five years the way we talk about Maclin, Chase, Aldon and Danario. I mean, this is just one game.

Your defensive MVPs: Michael Sam (8.35), Kentrell Brothers (8.11), Markus Golden (7.94), Randy Ponder (7.94), Andrew Wilson (7.63). (And I must say, we're taking Wilson for granted if he only got a 7.63.)

Defensive Coordinator

Dave Steckel: 7.78 (season average: 6.67)

Comments:

A good d line makes everyone look good

an obvious goal of the coaching staff was to pressure murray...that happened played a huge role in the win

As solid as I have seen his play calling.

At least it wasn't a slow start. Slow third quarter, but not a slow start.

Coach Stec is 0-"K"

Couldn't we bend just a little less?

Da good

Even with the injuries, UGA's offense will put up points on most teams. Game plan seemed solid.

Gonna pretend 3rd QTR never happened...

great game plan

Great job against a potent offense--injuries or no injuries.

Great pressure and secondary adjustments once EJ went down

Hard to complain when you hold the conference's best quarterback to his worst rating since 2012 and only give up 26, injuries be damned.

I gave Stec a 9, but then I don't want him to hurt me so I am typing in a 10 A TEN.

I know UGA was missing its playmakers, but that was a solid gameplan. -Mac6

I think I just hit return with something about Steckel not hurting me if I gave him a 10.

Love what Steck is doing with this group. He's fairly flexible with quality players at every level, but a near-dominant pass rush. Ironically, UGa did him a semi-favor by forcing the defense into nickel. Steck could drop out a safety rather than a LB.

overall good game, scary moments in the third obviously, but his D pulled through

Really need to work on secondary. Not a big fan of bend but don't break. Should be able to tackle better in secondary.

Solid gameplan

Still haven't given up 30. Impressive job by all.

Stopped the blitz in the 3Q, allowing Murray to sit back in a clean pocket.

The machine still has the only defense in the SEC to not give up 30+ points

Third quarter might b because offense was still in locker room

Tough when they make you go nickel just to rush the middle. Bend don't break, wish we had another name for it that didn't sound that bad.

Won the turnover battle, and the scoreboard battle, but in #7's house, statistics were about even, so this is a very, very good thing.

All Markus Golden does is make big plays. And stop lining up offsides please

Don't line up off sides!!! Come on. Killed your 2+ stops!!!

Everyone is going to ding Shane Ray for lining off sides, and I will too, but I'll remind you he forced the fumble Michael Sam ran in for a TD.

Game changing unit. Simple as that.

Great job by the starters and Golden

holy hell are these guys good or what?

holy hell are these guys good or what?

I love our DEs

I was going to give Ray a 3 for that terrible offsides penalty, but then came that sack/fumble. Biggest play of the first half. -Mac6

I'm sorry, but Ealy just looks lazy. Ray would get a 9, but those 3 offsides hurt. Big. Golden and Sam are BEASTLY.

Incredible pass rush!

Keep it up boys

Kony might be a better fit inside rather than out, his best attribute is getting his hands up to knock down the ball, and he doesn't get the pressure that Golden and Sam cause

Lights Out!!!!

Line up onsides please

Murray couldn't get comfortable, and the run game was mostly contained.

Not one guy stood out but the overall performance did

pressure for most of the game

Sam, Ray, and Golden held the spotlight., but the offsides penalties were a drag on the overall group rating. Still outstanding, but I'm thinking of the offsides penalties as I do drops and false starts on offense.

Stay on side. Ray cost Sam the Sam award this week.

STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE

Stop lining up in the neutral zone and you all get 9's

These guys were beastly all day! Back up 6 inches, Shane.

They were great.

They were MAMMOTH . Yep, I

Tiger D-Line = Unconscious

Watch Sam and Ray cut the corner. It's a thing of beauty. Ealy hasn't grabbed as many headlines this year, but his ability to duck inside is key to the unit's versatility.

Why did no one on this group get D Lineman of the week? Cause it would have had to have be given to just about each and every one of them

You guys. These guys.

Constantly getting their hands up and forcing bad throws great game

DE success has to be partially caused by the guys in the middle, right?

DE's couldn't get there job without the collapsing push of these boys. Great dominating effort in the pass although there were some holes on running plays.

DTs again not a lot of stats, but they were pushing the pocket all game. -Mac6

Excellent

Extremely solid.

For the most part, gaps were filled and pocket was pushed.

Grading our DTs is where I'd need to really watch gametape to give the most accurate scores. They really did let Georgia run between the tackles in the second half, but I'll grade them up since I think a lot won't

I love our DTs

If the big boys aren't getting push the ends don't matter. They gave up some gash running plays in nickel, but that was mostly about LBs and Ss.

Not bad.

Played solid.

Steady

The dirty work that goes unnoticed. The reason behind the ends pressure.

The front four produce every week. I can't remember the last time this was true. Our coverage is so much more effective because we get plenty of pressure without needing to blitz.

The tackles did very well.

They still don't get the glory of the ends but they get just as much credit for the DE's success. If they weren't doing their job the line wouldn't look anything like it does now.

Those runs up the middle in the second half had me worried...

Tiger D-Line = Unconscious!

Vincent seems non-existent. All other tackles did a solid job in my opinion; keep guards busy so DEs are one-on-one.

Vincent was the star of this group, but Brantley played alright as well.

Andrew Wilson: High-level pro prospect? How can a guy make 17 tackles in a game and stay under the radar?

Brothers and Wilson both made tackles and kept the running game at bay for most of the game

Brothers is looking great, glad we have him 2 more years. Wilson still our sure tackling beast.

Don't recall hearing Ruise's name. Best outing by our backers, though.

Except for Wilson, seem mostly invisible

Getting better

I don't see a lot of drop off from last year, like I thought I would.

KB SEC DPoW, Ruise recovered the fumble, Wilson being Wilson, Bonner being Bonner, great all around performance by the group.

KENTRELL!!!!

LB corps have really improved from game 1.

LBs did darn good too. Kentrell Brothers was all over the place.

LBs play better with every week. -Mac6

Outstanding

Playing good...

Solid

Still missing a few too many tackles

Still not sold on this group

Swarming. Brothers with the much deserved accolades and all Wilson does is hit dudes. A lot.

This group has quietly become not the liability I thought. That sounds like WAY more of a backhanded compliment than I mean.

Very Stout game by LB corps

Well Kentrell Brothers won SEC Defensive Player of the week and Andrew Wilson collided with Quayvon Hicks and no diamonds were formed. Edge: Brothers.

For one week and one week only, I love Randy Ponder

Gaines was looking decent until he got burnt and hurt his leg. Gibson filled in great for him- wouldn't be surprised if he got the start. Penton is coming around. Ponder only gave up one touchdown- only big play.

Gave the reserves a better grade than starters due to the fact that they're young guys trown into a high pressure situation and the took care of business!

Good job guys but turn you head and see where the ball is! Wrap them up! Need better tackling out of this group.

great game from Ponder and Pention after losing

great game from Ponder and Pention after losing Gaines

Group seems to be getting better every week.

Had some young guys really step up. Good job fellas.

Impressive, most impressive

Maybe that Randy Ponder isn't quite the weak sister we once thought.

Nice job hanging tough without EJ. I didn't know they could do that.

Nice work all around after Gaines went down. Now please EJ, be healthy

No one made a great play, but no one got really burnt either. -Mac6

Penton did a great job for being thrust into gaines spot hope he gets healthy quick

Penton did well filling in. Hope Gaines can go by the So. Car. game.

Penton stepped it up.

Penton, Gibson looking good, getting great experience for the future.

Please come back healthy Gaines. Not so worried about CB play against Florida as I am vs. SCAR.

Ponder, Penton, Gibson, all stepping up for EJ.

Randy stepped up after EJ's injury, led the DB's well.

Self inflicted injuries SUCK!!

Solid group.

Solid-ish

Stepping up in the clutch. A true freshman and a redshirt make me excited about the present and the future

Webb is quietly putting a case together for an all-SEC bid. Yeah, it's two games in but he really hasn't had a bad game. I didn't notice if White even played, which is exactly the way it should be.

Webb with a couple of PBUs, Simon with some energy plays. Didn't notice White much, which, at times (and in this case), is a positive.

Aim for the Middle

Andrew Baggett. C'Mon man.

aside from an extra point by bagget and one punt by brinser it was all good.

Baggett I like you, I really do but that PAT would have helped by blood pressure so much.

Baggett is inconsistent, but he is neutralizing return games all year. I knew he had a lot of touchbacks. I didn't know he lead the nation until the game broadcast. He is creating so much field position. If he were more accurate we'd be looking at a Groza award winner. Jinx alert: have we had a poor snap in the kicking game all year?

Baggett still needs accuracy that extra point he missed was huge, brisner is the tema mvp at this point ; )

Baggett? Baggett.

Baggett.... looks good then misses an extra point. If that 1 point would've mattered....

C'mon Baggett. Against Florida we may end up settling for Field Goals. My heart can't take you doing this to it.

Cannot miss XP. Kept the game a one score lead. -Mac6

Christian Brinser's legs lift weights.

Do we have Bob Saget or Andrew Baggett place-kicking for us?!? C'mon Andrew lets get it together!

Glad the missed PAT didn't bite 'em in the arse. Inexcusable.

Great punting, great kickoffs, but place kicking Bagget will cost us a game this year...

I knew when Andrew had to mark him self off 2 times that it was not going to be good. Confidence man! Confidence!!

Just when we thought Baggett had his kicking woes behind him...

Kickoffs were just amazing.

Laces Out! Kick straight! Forget 'fading' the shot every time

Missed PAT Baggett!?

missing an extra point with a good snap and hold is inexcusable

Ok Andrew. I get the FG misses. Sometimes. Please please please don't miss XP's when they will put us up 2 scores on the road against a top 10 team. Please.

Plenty of leg, just keep it between the uprights please.

Special

That missed extra point by Bagget could have been huge.

that missed XP could have completely changed the game. Fortunately it didn't. They need to figure something out to get this to stop with Baggett. Unacceptable.

U can not miss an extra point like thay

We can't miss anymore PATs. I can't bear the thought of a game coming down to his monstrous and wildly in accurate leg. Gulp.

We really need to look at the swimming and diving team for a replacement field goal kicker

Webb and Hurrell did their jobs. Brinser pinned the 'Dogs deep a couple of times, great job. Bagget....missed PAT, no soup for you.

We asked you for your grades. Here they are. Your offensive MVPs: L'Damian Washington (8.73), Marcus Murphy (8.10), James Franklin (7.95), Evan Boehm (7.86), Bud Sasser (7.67), and Max Copeland (7.63).

Offensive Coordinator

Josh Henson: 7.94 (season average: 7.40)

Comments:

3rd quarter sucked. Gotta get a first down with 2nd and 2 on Georgia's side of the field. Please, just STOP IT with the bubble screens.

3rd quater brings the grade down

A little too much sitting on the lead in 3Q

a ten a big 'ole ten, if I could

Ballsy

Colt 45 > Spider 2 Y Banana

Colt 45 was a great call! High risk, high reward.

Continues to put together an impressive rookie campaign.

Did Yost call the game on Saturday? Those bubble screen passes again! I thought objective was North and South not East and West! But it was a good setup for the BIG PLAY!

Every week I can't think of anything negative to say. Good offensive plans lead to wins.

Go for it on 4th when we need it.

Good except a couple screen plays. SEC defense blow em up.

Good job calling the "Throw a TD" plays

Got to give him a 9 for those to late touch downs with out Frank.

Got too conservative in the third quarter on play calls...offense looked lethargic, but what a call in the 4th quarter w/the colt 45! Big Time Cajones!

Great game overall. I am amazed by the aggressiveness on Colt 45 (and glad it worked). — jst

Great job!

gutsy call to go for the Colt 45, worked though, so he gets a 9

He knows what he's doing, I don't fear any SEC DEF-coordinator, knowing Henson is calling the shots.

he seems to have a better feel for the game looking for weaknesses etc

I don't know where to write about going for it on 4th down, but I think Mizzou made a mistake twice punting in the 3rd quarter. Don't put the ball in the other teams hands! -Mac6

I was really impressed by the RBs out in the flats to open up slants, gutsy run plays, and the gutsy trick play. 41 points on the road is never something to sneeze at.

Loved what he did to adjust for Mauk, and I liked the balance.

Next HC for Mizzou. Yes I said it last week.

Outside of the 3rd quarter hiccup and calling the JF getting hurt play, pretty masterful. Plus his Colt 45 balls

Play calling looked good, but we called far too many swing passes and runs to the outside that didn't go anywhere.

soooo much not Yost

The cashews needed to call Colt 45 in that situation...whew!

The only reason I'm not giving him a 9 is that awful, awful 3rd quater

Third quarter questionable, great job bringing Mauk in green

Two weeks in a row OC called the touchdown play just when we needed it.

Very good game. Still no WTF YOST? moments, that's always a plus. As for Colt .45? BULLSEYE!

Wasn't the smoothest of games, but when the engine is on it can't be stopped

What happened in the third quarter? I want answers! Otherwise, people are going to continue to complain Pinkel "played not to lose".

Would have graded better but the 3rd quarter play calling seemed lacked aggressiveness.

WR screens still, NO. WR pass, YES!

And now I'm sad for JF again. -Mac6

Frank only missed one pass to Washington... overall, great game. HEAL UP! Mauk filled in admirably.

Franklin is starting to annoy me with the 'disregard open running lane, let me run to where the tacklers are', but its a nitpick. Overall, SOLID to GREAT. Injury is a major bummer. Mauk 3/3, but now that he's the starter, SASSER FOR QB!

Franklin looked damn good, if this is how you want to end a career -- this is a great high note. Mauk played mistake free and had a great pass to dgb.

Franklin was beasting in that 1st half then the wheels feel off then he got hurt and now maty mauk will win us a national championship

Franklin was outstanding. Mauk definitely had the jitters which is understandable but he handled it pretty well.

Gave Franklin a 9, for obvious reasons. So sad to see him go down. But Mauk can run our offense and is as good a replacement as we could hope for. As sad as I am, I'm also excited to see what he can do on a big stage.

Get well Tank.

Great job from both! What more can be said about James. Such dignity at all times. As for Maty, he came in at a time when the game was absolutely set up for UGA to take it away. That didn't happen. Go to sleep on him, Florida. I dare you.

How can i give Franklin a 10 on this freakin' thing!?!

If you don't give James a 9 you are a heartless, soulless person

James deserved this season, just more proof that life's not fair. Mauk looked cool as a cucumber for the position he was put in.

James did great, Maty came in and helped closed the door on the game 8

James Franklin could have been a (Heisman) Contender. Mauk: One decent pass to DGB does not a QB make. And he didn't do THAT much on the trick play to Sasser. He DID nearly throw an INT on a sideline pass to Josey.

James has had a great and redeeming year. Prayers for healing. Now it is Mauktober. Let's see what he can do.

james has had a very productive season what you would hope for a senior

James looked good and in command. Maty looked sharp but needs to be the leader now and gain James attitude in running offense. He is our QB next year so might as well get used to it. Duel QB's against Florida (Maty and Corbin)???

Just...damn.

Kid made me proud.

Maty came in with no prep time and didn't crap the bed. That's all we could ask of him in that situation. JFF was his usual self, right up to, and including, his ghastly injury.

Neither had stats that would blow you away but what they didn't have (turnovers) is why they grade out high for me

No complaints about Franklin. Mauk did what he had to do. Survive and advance. — jst

No turnovers from either one, and we scored two TDs with Mauk in to ice it. Pretty darn good.

Our 3Q probably would have graded better had that 15 yds been called on hit to L. Washington on the slant. Would have put us in FG range at least.

Poor poor Tank. Get healthy soon. Mauk played well, kept our heads above water. Good luck kid, you've got the talent to be successful.

Sasser gets a 10!!!

Scooter for Heisman

Scores when needed

The three and outs were troublesome, especially in the third quarter, but Franklin did a great job until he was injured. Mauk was serviceable, will be interested to see what he can do with a week of practice (and the best defense in the country coming to town).

What wasn't there to like from their play on the field

2 touchdowns among them, but Murphy would not be denied.

Another solid game. Murphy was great on that TD and had a good return too. -Mac6

Didn't see much from Mansbrough, but what was there was good. Josey and Murphy were very, very good. Murph's TD was....amazing....is the only word I can think of.

Difficulties between the tackles

Find out just how solid this group is against Florida

Get Marcus into the second level of the defense and watch him make people miss. Was amazed at how quickly he returned to top speed after stumbling on his TD run. I thought for sure he would be caught from behind.

Great three-headed beastly monster.

Hansbrough penalized for not shucking that horse collar and getting into the endzone on play!

HENRY EFFING JOSEY. Also, Murph showed amazing balance and burst on that touchdown run. — jst

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Henry Effing Josey. Also MM .

Josey was good enough, grinded out our plays. But I'm glad to see Murphy hit the home runs b/c he's been the best runner this year.

Josey: STUD, we will begin to rely on him with Frank out. Hansbrough had a down game. Murphy is the #Best3rdStringRBintheNation

Keep it up boys we need now more then ever.

Murph Dawg!!! Would like to have seen more of Hansbrough.

Murphy had the momentum grabbing TD run, Josey had the nail-in-the-coffin TD. They did very well against one of the better D's in the country.

Murphy is off the chain. Period.

Murphy keeps getting better, Josey is Josey and Hansbrough is learning

Murphy's TD run was a thing of beauty and bad tackling, Josey flying through the air to seal the deal was just amazing

Not much from Russ, but big days from Josey and Murph show the deadliness of the three heads

That Murph run for TD was amazing

The case of Missour vs Georgia. Missouri represented by the law firm came out victorious after a clever legal move by Mr. Murphy

There don't seem to be very many four yard runs with this bunch. It's either a chunk or nothing.

These guys never give up! Don't go where everybody is.

they are all producing they are getting plenty of long runs hansbrough surprisingly is a decent short yardage back

Three heads are better than one

Didn't hardly see Clark/White at all. Average to slightly above (Washington excepted) for receiving as far as receiving goes, but the blocking. This WR corps blocks really, really well.

Everyone is going to fawn over Bud Sasser, but this is about the WRs. DGB: wherefore art thou? LDW: you're becoming an NFL WR at this rate.

Great blocking, LDW is the man, DGB had some great catches, and Bud Sasser for State Treasurer. Money.

Great blocking!!! WR that will block for other players!!!

Great throw, great catch, and great blocking as well

haven't seen a lot of some but they are all very deep and big washington though is the best at getting seperation

If DGB could commit to blocking, on some of those quick passes to the outside, the offense would break more big plays.

LDW!

Nice throw, Bud. Holy crap, L'Damian is playing out of his mind this year! Did Darius catch any balls? Still expecting him to explode this season, but there are only so many balls to go around.

No SASSER in the QB section?! What is this??

Sasser is gonna get his highest grade of the season because he threw a pass. Oh and it is well deserved. Also: thanks for helping Mauk DGB. I see you too making many more the next couple of years.

Stick! Stick! Stick! Great blocking by the WR's all day. Big catch at the end by DBG. Sasser with the best QB Rating in the SEC! Darius might have missed a few routes.

I wonder if they'll be more of a factor with Mauk at QB.

Is Culkin ever gonna catch one?

Jack in the Box

Look for this aspect of the game to really come alive against Florida with a first-time starter.

Maybe the big game comes Saturday

Not much in the passing game this week so I'm assuming they did a good job blocking.

One second they're here, and then they're gone

TE? They stayed in columbia didn't they?

TEs disappeared again. -Mac6

They did well.

they seem to produce when needed blocking needs to get better

Offensive Line

Evan Boehm: 7.86 (season average: 7.40)
Max Copeland: 7.63 (6.74)
Mitch Morse: 7.41 (6.95)
Connor McGovern: 7.39 (6.90)
Justin Britt: 7.07 (6.83)

Britt gets beat, a lot. 3 sacks because of him???

Britt got blowed up a couple of times but other than that Mad Max had a great sack-saving block and the line as a whole did a good job against a good front 7.

Britt was getting burned a few too many times on the outside

can't complain

Copeland made some nice plays.

Evan Boehm was snapping a little high, but everything worked out.

Great blocking, and eventual holes opened up for running backs.

Great job, overall, but a few high snaps seemed to disrupt the timing of several plays.

Honestly I liked the line play overall. There were things that could have been better but it was a very fine preformance. Keep improving every week.

I think they are playing very well for the talent that they have they donot seem to consistantly be able to move people of they ball at the point of attack

Make some holes for the running game. Don't care if it's Florida.

OL did a great job on the road. -Mac6

Outstanding!!!

Protect Mauk. Let him slang deep balls!

Snaps? Check!

Solid game. Finished strong when we needed to run the ball. Have to carry this team the rest of the way.

Solid performance by the o-line copeland in particular did a good job in pass protection

Studs protect this Mauk.

Very nice job all the way around! Most of the sacks seemed to me like we held the ball too long. Their team work makes this whole thing work.

Very solid and worked as a team, Need to keep same intensity against Florida. Max made great block to keep James from getting nailed on pass play!

Wante to take them down a nnotch for allowing 4 sacks, but some of that is placed on JF for running into the sacks, or not getting rid of the ball. That, and they blocked for 4 TDs, 2 passing, 2 rushing, so a very, very good day for the OL.

Was at the game and I cannot say ENOUGH GOOD THINGS about Boehm's ability to snap the ball. I believe that was one of the biggest factors of Tank's success this year. He has absolutely killed it for us this year. What a great move to make him the center.

Will know if for real Saturday.

For now, Franklin is putting his energies toward tutoring his replacement, redshirt freshman Maty Mauk.
Asked if the starting job would be Franklin's upon his return, Pinkel said he'd "suggest" it would.

"I kind of had some experience last year being a coach," Franklin said. "I think I can bring that over to this year and encourage the guys, especially Maty and Corbin as they go in and perform." [...]

Even though it was difficult to see Franklin sidelined again, he knows the quarterback will take the positives out of a negative.

"He was having a great year, playing as good as any quarterback we've ever had," Pinkel said. "That's life. I feel for him. The most important thing is he has people around him that support him and love him.

"He's got to start coaching now. His leadership's still got to crank up. He'll get back as soon as it's possible to get back."

L’Damian Washington didn’t know Harry Hite.

But when Washington saw Hite decked out in Tigers gold waiting for a flight at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport on the morning of Dec. 29, 2010, he had to speak with him.

Only a few hours earlier, Missouri was stunned 27-24 against Iowa in the Insight Bowl when Micah Hyde returned a Blaine Gabbert interception 72 yards for the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Washington, now a senior and No. 14 Missouri’s leading receiver, was only a redshirt freshman at the time. But that didn’t stop Washington for walking over and apologizing to Hite for Missouri’s loss.

"Our goal is to please our fans at the end of the day," said Washington, who leads Missouri with 455 receiving yards and seven touchdowns this season. [...]

That desire to win was evidenced by Washington’s gesture after the Insight Bowl, even if the fan turned out to be Missouri senior linebacker Andrew Wilson’s maternal grandfather.

"He didn’t know he was my grandfather," Wilson said, "but he just saw he was a Mizzou fan and L’Damian’s such a great guy."

1. Pressure. Is. Cumulative

That sounds familiar, doesn't it? The Fran Fraschilla basketball mantra also works in the pass rush department. On the stat sheet, Georgia's pass rush was more effective than Missouri's -- the Dawgs got to James Franklin four times in 31 attempts, far more than Mizzou was used to allowing; meanwhile, Mizzou only sacked Aaron Murray twice: once on Shane Ray's sack-and-strip in the second quarter (which resulted in the Michael Sam touchdown) and once via "Markus Golden emasculates the right tackle" in the fourth quarter.

But how many times did Aaron Murray have a clean, fixed pocket from which to throw? It seems like you could count them on one hand. Most of the time, Murray was forced to pause from his progression to either move up in the pocket or move around the pocket. Mizzou's ends were consistently buzzing the tower, and I think we saw the effects of that late in the game. Murray is great, and he was mostly error-free, but his final two possessions both ended in mistakes and interceptions. He was forced to throw on the run and didn't see Randy Ponder cheating off of his man for the easy pick, and he was running around and desperate to make something happen when he was picked off by Kentrell Brothers. Mizzou's pass rush wasn't incredibly successful in terms of the actual number of sacks, but it defined Mizzou's defensive performance, and it helped to ice the game late.

2. "And the third quarter started ... yadda, yadda, yadda ... so then the fourth quarter was pretty awesome."

In the third quarter, Gary Pinkel caught all sorts of hell on the Internets for "choking" or "not showing a killer instinct" or whatever your derisive "I disagree with this coach's decision!" cliché of choice might be. And to be sure, punting twice on fourth-and-4 inside your opponent's 40 does not grade out very well from an Underdog Tactics 101 standpoint. I didn't hate either call, even though I knew he would get mocked for them as they were happening. Two reasons for that:

A) Pinkel did not coach that game like his team was the underdog. Punting didn't scream "I'm scared" to me as much as "I think my defense can stop them if they have to go the length of the field." Mizzou was more than keeping up athletically, and the Tigers had built an 18-point lead without help from trickeration or fluky plays. (Okay, the fumble recovery late in the second quarter was at least a little fluky, in the sense that it's hard to rely on that to succeed, but that's about it.) He was coaching that game like he had a 15-point lead on an evenly matched team.

(And he was basically right. Mizzou pinned Georgia at the 3 on the first punt, and the Dawgs went three-and-out. And even though the second punt was a touchback, Georgia still needed two penalties, including a pass interference call I hated on a third-and-2 incompletion, to get all the way down the field.)

B) I was also okay with punting because I wasn't sure Mizzou could convert. First of all, this is fourth-and-4 we're talking about here, not fourth-and-1. You should basically always go for it on fourth-and-1 in your opponent's territory unless a field goal basically wins you the game. But not only are the percentages quite a bit lower on fourth-and-4, but ... the Mizzou offense just had no edge whatsoever. Franklin seemed to be making decisions too slowly -- it's randomly been a problem of his throughout his career -- and the line was getting beaten up pretty badly. If "Go for it or punt it?" was a 50-50 call, I think that might have pushed it over the line to "Yeah, just punt."

For the game, Georgia's Damian Swann had 7.5 tackles, second-most on the team. But if you're ever looking for a reason why tackles are a pretty terrible measure without context, this is a pretty good example. Five of his tackles came after his man caught a pass; on three of those, he was tackling L'Damian Washington after gains of 10, 12, and 17. He was also covering on both of Washington's touchdowns. Mizzou found a matchup it liked and milked it.

That said, the distribution was still pretty even. Four players (including the QBs as one guy, anyway) had between eight and 13 intended touches, and three others had five each. Mizzou distributes the damn ball, but it certainly found a particular matchup to exploit along the way and did so unabashedly.

4. Praise be to Andrew Wilson

Like I said yesterday, I'm really happy for Kentrell Brothers in being named SEC Defensive Player of the Week. He's been great for Missouri this year -- as great as I hoped he'd be, and my expectations were pretty high. That he's a sophomore makes it all the better. But he really was the second-best Missouri linebacker on the field on Saturday.

This really might have been Andrew Wilson's best game. His stat line was fine (four solo tackles, seven assists, 0.5 tackles for loss, and a break-up), but that only tells part of the story. One of those tackles came after he straight stood up Georgia's great fullback, Quayvon Hicks. Another came as he met Hicks one-on-one on third-and-1 and knocked him straight to the ground.

For the game, Georgia's freshman running backs had a lovely day: 26 carries, 157 yards (6.0 per carry). But 57 of those yards came on one play, which means the per-carry average was otherwise 4.0 on the dot. And when Georgia got inside the Missouri 10, the Dawgs threw. They didn't trust the ground game, and while part of that was probably because of their freshman backs, don't tell me Wilson and the rest of the front seven didn't at least factor into that.

With Mizzou up 14-7, Georgia had a first down at Mizzou's 16. Two Brendan Douglas rushes gained five yards (both were stopped by defensive backs, actually), and a third down pass fell incomplete. Field goal.

With Mizzou up 28-10, Georgia had a first down at Mizzou's 18. Murray found Chris Conley for eight yards on first down, and Douglas fumbled on second down. (The box score says Lucas Vincent forced the fumble, but I actually could have sworn it was Wilson.)

On the first drive of the second half, Green's 57-yard run gave Georgia first-and-goal from the 10. Matt Hoch stuffed Green for no gain on first down, and Wilson broke up a pass to Rantavious Wooten on third down.

Mizzou's defense is predicated on bending, then making plays with its collective back near the goal line. Wilson was involved in a good number of drive-killing plays.

And seriously, you have to be a man to do what Wilson did to Hicks on those plays. My goodness. Grown man football? Grown man football.

5. Big plays on passing downs

Georgia's success rate on passing downs was quite a bit better than Missouri's, but if there were big plays to be made, Missouri was making them.

Missouri passing on passing downs: 9-for-11 for 92 yards (and three sacks)
Georgia passing on passing downs: 8-for-16 for 81 yards (and an INT)

Five of Missouri's 14 pass attempts gained at least 10 yards (36%); four of Georgia's 17 did the same (24%). Mizzou's PPP (explosiveness) countered Georgia's success rate (efficiency).

6. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers

The stats tell the same story that your eyes probably did: Turnovers were the difference. Georgia outgained Mizzou by 79 yards and 6.0 equivalent points, but Mizzou was +4 (and +19.6 equivalent points) in the turnovers department and won by basically the projected amount. (Of course, Mizzou should have won by 16, not 15, and DON'T EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN, ANDREW BAGGETT.) The Tigers won the field position battle and, at worst, matched Georgia in terms of big plays, but turnovers were a clear, determining factor.

One more word about turnovers, though: Over the course of a season, we treat turnovers basically as instruments of luck. And as I've talked about a lot, some aspects are. You're going to recover 50 percent of all fumbles over an extended period of time, so if you recover two of two in a given game (as Missouri did), then you're perhaps a little bit lucky. And interceptions require a defensive player (who might be a defensive player because his hands are terrible) to hold onto the ball, which is a bit lucky, too. But while Mizzou recovered one more fumble than it perhaps should have, a) Georgia was still the team that fumbled twice (and fumbles are at least partially in your control), and b) the two picks were pretty legitimate considering the Tigers also broke up seven other passes. On average, you're going to have one pick for every four passes broken up; Mizzou had two to seven.

Turnovers are partially based on luck, and they are somewhere between difficult and impossible to rely on over the long haul, but Mizzou won this game because it made fewer mistakes, and turnovers were the most direct reflection of that.

What a great win. Please let me type those words again a week from now.

On the wide receivers' improvement in the blocking game...

"We probably did not get the ball outside much last year, so we did not have a lot to compare it too. We have very solid and big receivers. People point that out to me, like our opponents' media for example. They take a lot of pride, and I think they understand the importance of it. It is difficult with the amount of space out there. It doesn't work all the time. If you get the right blocks at the right time you can spring the ball forward. Some of our guys can turn a 6-yard gain into a 25-yard gain. Coach Washington is doing a real good job with that."

On wide receiver L'Damian Washington's play-making abilities...

"He is such a talented guy, and is such a verbal leader on this team. He leads by example. The players have so much respect for him. His background and all that he has been through means a lot. He possesses great maturity, and strength as a leader. He is such a positive person, and such a determined individual. We are getting good leadership from a lot of people on this team. The senior class as a whole stands out, but certainly L'Damian and will always stand out. He is going to be so successful just because of who he is, and the players are starting to recognize that."

On working against a strong Florida defense...

"They are really good. I expected not necessarily a big drop off from last year, but maybe a little drop off because the players they lost. They have a system in place, and a great defensive scheme. They are very well coached, and very disciplined. He (Florida Head Coach, Will Muschamp) does a great job with that program."

Assistant athletic trainer Casey Hairston asked Franklin if he’d seen the reports on Twitter.

"I was like, ‘No, sir. Not yet,’" Franklin said Monday. "My phone died. He said, ‘Well, don’t worry about it.’"

The two anonymously sourced reports said Franklin would miss at least six weeks (CBSSports.com) or the rest of the regular season (ESPN).

Not so, Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said Monday. Franklin’s prognosis is more promising: He’s expected to miss three to five weeks with what Pinkel described Monday as a sprained throwing shoulder.

At three speaking engagements Monday — at the Tiger Quarterback Club luncheon, his weekly news conference and during his radio show — Pinkel insisted that Saturday night’s news was inaccurate. He first saw ESPN’s report while watching TV at his home in Columbia.

"Where’d they come from?" he asked at his news conference. "Anybody know?"

And Mauk couldn’t help but feel the flickering flutter of a butterfly. He had thrown just three collegiate passes, all against Murray State, and had every reason to wonder how to cope with the moment.

Franklin said he's been cautious doling out advice to Mauk about what to expect when he runs up against Florida's defense on Saturday.

"You definitely don’t want to overdo it. It’s important and everything, but I don’t want to overhype him or make it feel like a bigger deal than it is," Franklin said. "He’s playing against Florida, but he did a lot of good things in high school. Just keep that mentality, and I’ll give him some advice about the things I experienced and things that I think work at this level. Hopefully I’ll be able to help him out."

Pinkel, offensive coordinator Josh Henson and quarterbacks coach Andy Hill all said the Tigers won't change their offense now that Mauk is behind center.

And he has the full backing of the team.

"I think our offensive players will 100 percent support Maty Mauk," Pinkel said. "How about them playing at a real high level? Maybe that's where we should start."
